I see what you did there. :D

It’s a tough time to be an indie developer, with Steam’s new sale event causing wishlist deletions

Well, if it's any consolation to indie devs reading GoL, my wishlist is a mess. :)

DOSBox is still alive, with a new bug fix release available
27 Jun 2019 at 2:32 pm UTC

I never had a DOS machine (we Amiga users laughed at your text-mode single-tasking OS... although we stopped when Doom came out), but I occasionally use DOSBox, rather than UAE, to play the original Settlers because it can run in a higher SVGA resolution. It's only - off the top of my head - 640x480, but it seemed huge back in the day compared with 320x200 (or 256 on PAL Amigas), and it's definitely more comfortable to play.

It doesn't have the two-player split-screen mode though, so ner. :P

{Edit: Actually, now I think about it, that's not true. It does. But Player 2 has to use a joystick rather than a second mouse. Eurgh. :sick:}

Raspberry Pi 4 announced and available - sounds like a pretty nice upgrade, Raspbian now based on Debian 10

Quoting: DragunovI personally dislike the Raspbian OS though, I would prefer Vanilla Debian. Right now i'm using Ubuntu Mate [External Link]..
I know what you mean, but - although it's probably less of an issue with these newer machines - on the original B+, there was a a very noticeable performance difference between Debian (or Arch) and Raspbian.

Quoting: jarhead_hMy laptop is a HP Core2Duo from 2012 that I'm pretty sure would be beaten by this thing.
:D That's a good point. I'm still using a ten-year-old Atom netbook every day, and... yeah... £35, you say?

Epic's Tim Sweeney thinks Wine "is the one hope for breaking the cycle", Easy Anti-Cheat continuing Linux support

Quoting: elmapulwhetever have the biggest marketshare will have some exclusives simply because the developers didnt have the funds to port to everything so they chose the most promissing platform...
Strictly speaking, that's not an exclusive; it's just a single-platform game. And, although people don't generally think of it in these (correct) terms, I think that's the problem most of us have with what Epic's doing: they're signing exclusive contracts; i.e., obliging publishers not to release on other platforms regardless of whether they're financially or technically able to, purely in order to drive customers towards the EGS.

Few of us really mind if a developer doesn't have the resources to port to Linux. It sucks, but we understand: you need to make the most of what you have, and that means targetting the biggest market. What grates about Epic is the way they've forced publishers and developers who have supported Linux in the past - Gearbox/2K come to mind - not to, even if only temporarily. And then, to rub salt into the wound, Sweeney comes along saying he wants to “break the cycle”.

Oooh, that looks good. I have a few Pis scattered around the place (mostly idle, it has to be said), but still never got around to buying a 3. Might just skip that version altogether. :)

Quoting: eldakingHe is just full of shit. What he is actually saying is "I think Linux is not viable. I want my games to work automatically without putting any effort. There is no way you are going to make me support Linux except by doing all the work for me."
Exactly. If he really thinks Wine is “the one hope”, then why isn't he putting money and effort into things like DXVK and integrating it into his online store? Frankly, I simply don't believe he means it. As Liam points out, he's clearly au fait with what's going on with Wine, SteamPlay, and Ubuntu, so he can't claim ignorance.

Show us a Linux version of the EGS. Show us EpicPlay. Otherwise, it really doesn't look as if you're terribly interested in “breaking the cycle” at all.

What are you playing this weekend and what do you think about it? It's mostly Dota Underlords for me

Quoting: ageresResident Evil 4 with HD textures from http://www.re4hd.com/?page_id=6064 [External Link] and d9vk.
I had to use a Windows VM to apply the 4GB patch tool and install new files. Is it possible to execute Windows .bat files with Wine? I couldn't do.
As far as I recall - I used it for much the same purpose a couple of years ago - wineconsole is what you're looking for. Run on its own, it brings up a Windows commandline, but I'm pretty sure it runs .bat files too.

{Edit: Oh, I see tuubi got in ahead of me. That'll work too. wineconsole is just a wrapper for that anyway, as far as I can make out.}

I downloaded Underlords (because, well... FREE!) but I haven't played it yet. Mainly because I bought the first Project Cars in the Humble sale on Monday night - they were practically giving it away - and I've already put in more than 20 hours on it. I should really get myself a wheel...

Quoting: BotonoskiGosh, I just spent four days building a desk out of scrap wood without any power tools. I feel I should celebrate by using this new desk and enjoying some games and whatnot, but all I wanna do is gently caress my new desk.
Stop that. You're making the rest of us look lazy. :)

Cecconoid, an 8-bit inspired "flick-screen" twin-stick-shooter that looks awesome is coming to Linux

Quoting: wvstolzingI really like this visual style. The name is a clear throwback to 'Cybernoid' of course
... by Raf Cecco. As were Equinox, Stormlord, and Exolon. :) Back in the day, he was one of the names that more or less guaranteed quality, at least on the Spectrum. (I think his primary system was actually the Amstrad CPC, although I could be wrong.)

I remember a discussion online a few years ago about the best British publisher of the '80s, and someone pointed out that it's hard to think of a bad game from Hewson (who published most of Cecco's games). They were never considered one of the big names like Ocean or Ultimate (i.e., Rare), but their quality control was second to none. If you're interested in British '80s retro games, that's a rich seam to mine.
