Free Valve Games For Debian Developers
22 Jan 2014 at 7:55 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from ShmerlIf Valve wants to make a positive move, they should start offering DRM free games, rather than "free" games. That would be a welcome step. And it's time for them to address the issue of DRM anyway.
I wouldn't expect them to give out DRM free games because Steam. But GoldSCR games really should be open sourced/DRM Free these days since it would be a gesture of openness without having to give away all their trade secrets ;). Its funny though that if you own the CD edition of Half-Life its pretty much DRM free anyway.

Steam's Set Of January Greenlit Linux Titles

Quoting: Quote from muntdefemsI wouldn't hold my hopes too high for Chronology... As soon as I discovered it on Greenlight I got very interested in it, but even though they must have included Linux to the platforms list, this is what they actually have to say about porting the game to our OS:

So, "they are looking into it". Make what you will of that.
"looking into it" = We don't know if its possible yet. But if it is then we might if its not too much effort for us.

Nice of Valve to do that. Think some source code would have been more valuable but I guess in this case the DD's know more than Valve :D.

Alienware's Steam Machine Won't Be Customizable
22 Jan 2014 at 4:31 pm UTC

I've noticed Linux has a bad reputation when for performance from some people, ironically in my computing class.
Its terrible that they don't even know that it powers most servers in the world, however I agree the drivers could be a lot better. This is why it would be hard for me to sell a Steambox to one of my friends because if I mention the L word the first thing they think of is low powered device which runs 10% of their steam library. This is very wrong and I want to see valve convince people that these myths are just that.

What's also interesting that i couldn't easily convince PC people either to go for a locked down device, its going to harm the sales more than increase it by locking it down since more and more people these days want that level of customizability. I'm pretty sure quite a few console players have swapped around hard drives and things and aren't afraid of a little upgradable console.

Linux Game Sales Statistics From Multiple Developers

Quoting: Quote from Half-ShotWell, that just tells you just how far that 2% in the hardware stats goes. Really interesting read and I didn't realise how larger share Linux had of games. Even rust is a good number, since that's sold in the 100,000s already so its going really well.
Indeed, looking at Garry's blog considering how many they have sold (over 150,000 in the first two weeks), let's add another two weeks worth to 300,000 and keep it there up to today at that figure (it could easily be more by now).

They said their Linux base is about 0.4% so when you do the workings out if we didn't go any higher than 0.4% on Rust and with Steam's takings over 30% then Rust has easily made at least £12,500 from Linux gamers alone.

Let me put that into perspective for you, that's since 11th December 2013 just over a month ago.

I hope other developers take notice, a small market share doesn't mean crap earnings.
With things like Unity, its crazy how much money there acutally is in it over the cost of developing it. Oh and we are the best platform for support because we tend to fix each others problems :P.

EDIT: Oh yeah, its good to hear the developers thoughts on it. Very positive thoughts as well.

AMD Catalyst 13.11 Linux Beta V9.95 Driver Is Out
10 Jan 2014 at 5:56 pm UTC

I heard from one of the 'engineers' that the 13.12 is actually just a more stable 13.11 and so the 13.11 V9.95 is actually newer than the stable one. But i think it wasn't enough of a change to make it a 14.1 just yet.

Played it a while back under wine but a native port is really great news now there is a sequel coming. Kan Gao is a awesome guy and one of the best story writers I think gaming has ever had.
