Quoting: ShmerlYeah, I'm interested about this too. This [External Link] shows that mesa could support 4 very soon which means we might just sneak in the door before it closes.Quoting: toniIt's all a matter of which version of ogl you want to target, and they're targetting 4 core.That's exactly what I'm saying. He didn't say they target 4.4 core profile. He said "OpenGL 4 core profile" which is ambiguous and can mean any 4.x.
If it was me, i would target to 4.3 CP, you have can follow AZDO there with all needed in core :D

Quoting: HamishWhy does everyone choose to show Turtle Arena... :PI was thinking that too, not the first thing that makes me think of Quake Engines :). Guess its kid friendly.
At any rate, this is good news, especially for people who still regularly play Quake III like myself.

Good news for me. I'm surprised it wasn't SDL2 before. Very useful for us on 3 screens and want to mod the engine.

TL;DR Preformance!=Best
And yes that was fanboyism, not for AMD but for Linux and FOSS. I couldn't care less about catalyst either, but I damn well want mesa to take over.

Quoting: Segata SanshiroI don't think its fair to say that. The Linux drivers are still pretty close on Windows for performance but what people ALWAYS fail to realise is that there are many other factors to choosing a GPU other than performance per watt or per currency.My first thought is that AMD are fighting a losing battle on both the CPU and GPU front, being quite clearly second best at both.I would agree with the GPU side of things (especially on Linux), but with lower-end CPUs AMD clearly trumps Intel.
- If a new Xorg came out tomorrow, radeon would be supporting it from day one.
- If xfce-wayland came out tomorrow, radeon would run out of the box on it.
- If nvidia came out tomorrow and stopped supporting, even if it is theoretical, there would be no obligation by them to release code or do anything.
TL;DR Preformance!=Best

Demand wasn't as much as Windows -> Linux
But I'm not dualbooting just to stream.

Quoting: MetallinatusI have a 7000 card on the git drivers which are a tad buggy and from my testing I have NEVER seen that. But to me that looks like a hardware fault and you should get it refunded right away.Quoting: Half-ShotI wish I was.... last year I was still using a HD 3000 series card and it wasn't veeery powerful but the mesa drivers worked fine with it at least (and there were not even AMD drivers for it anymore)....Quoting: MetallinatusThe Steam Client is still missing a working version for my PC.... but the blame for that falls in AMD with their crappy drivers, not Valve -.-You must be running an incredibly old card or on catalyst for that to be the case though...
The thingy can't even handle Cinnamon anymore in its last "stable" version....
I'm totally jumping to Nvidea in the next upgrade to never return-, but oh, yeah, we were talking about Steam, right?
Then I bought a HD 7000 series card released last year and, well.... this [External Link] is how it looks like with mesa.
Catalyst worked (without direct rendering) for one day and then broke Cinnamon.
PS: this is a fresh brand new install of Mint 17 because Catalyst already broke my system last time.
As a result, my underpowered notebook is my saviour once again.
AMD Working Closely With Khronos Group On Next-gen OpenGL, Gives Mantle Access

However it's these little things that make me stick with AMD. I would take an open standards advocator over more power any day.

Quoting: CimerydI'm sure you guys will jump on me for this, but they appear to be the underpowered but of good morales on the Linux side and while it's hard to deny that the CPUs are not competitive enough, the GPUs on Windows are still competitive.That's pretty good of AMD to offer it up like that, but to what end? What would be the point of having an OpenGL API that very closely mimics the Mantle API? You would then have two competing API's that are near the same.My first thought is that AMD are fighting a losing battle on both the CPU and GPU front, being quite clearly second best at both. "Helping" both OpenGL and DirectX by giving them code and direction tailored to AMD hardware will bridge that gap, and might even push them over the top in some performance tests. AMD is a hardware company first and the software is there to sell the hardware. This makes perfect sense.
However it's these little things that make me stick with AMD. I would take an open standards advocator over more power any day.

Gratuitous Space Battles 2 Officially Announced For Linux

I found the first one good but had many flaws that it felt distant to me. First off, it was waaay to hard to mod your ships. You had to go through lots of menus, load and save ships, rebuilt your fleet if you battle goes badly.
I see the need to make a game like this detailed but it was cumbersome to make changes. The battles themselves were quite good.
For the second I want LOTS of parts for each ship, and possibly the ability to design your own.
P.S: I found the Linux version quite good.

Quoting: GuestAha, they have their own compositor! But could they not be arsed to make their own desktop environment from ground up? tsk, tsk, tsk. I would have wanted to see that. But time is of the essence; it is too late to start with something like that now.For Valve's purposes, Steam Big Picture is their desktop environment.
