This article is written from a Windows-centric viewpoint (understandably so from a mainstream site). Vulkan graphics benefit more from extra threads. However, the biggest reason to consider AMD CPUs is that they are better bang for the buck processors, and that benefit is pretty much erased if you are going to buy from a computer vendor that charges a premium like Entroware.

debianxfce is not wrong about Threadripper though. It's basically two Ryzen's slapped into the same package and it has some of the same issues that dual socket setups have with latency and scheduling between NUMA-nodes and such, and while Linux is better at handling that than Windows, it's still not ideal, and the fastest Ryzen's will mostly beat Threadripper's in games.

It's surprising Canonical didn't take care of providing gamers oriented preset, where kernel and Mesa are kept up to date by default. I suppose they expect that gamers aren't going to use Ubuntu in general, and would focus on rolling distros for the most part? If this PC is oriented on gamers, may be they should sell it with a rolling distro to begin with.

Personally, I also like buying components and assembling them myself, instead of getting a pre-assembled PC. An option in between are stores which assemble a custom PC for you, based on your components specification.

This is partly why I switched from Ubuntu to Debian Sid. It's a rolling release with timely kernel and Mesa updates.

In Ubuntu's defence though, the only reason you need PPA's is the rapid development of Vulkan games and Proton. As things mature, the need for PPA's will go away and just sticking to the latest Ubuntu release, or even LTS with latest HWE should be fine. Even now it is mostly fine unless you run into issues trying to use Proton.

I just realised that the Deprived class is level 1. Should have chosen that instead of Mercenary. Ironically I used Deprived for my other now level 181 character :S:

Pontiff Sulyvahn is defeated. It was a major pain until I realised he can be parried and riposted and with a little help from Anri of Astora and Black Hand Gotthard it wasn't so bad after all. :D

At lvl 1? Did you start with a new character and went till this guy without leveling up?!?

Yup :)
Died to him four times now so I'm gonna take a break and give it another shot tomorrow.
And by level 1 I actually mean level 8 because that's the starting level so you can't actually be level 1 in this game.
No co-op partners around to rely on either because matchmaking won't allow to call in sunbros that are at a significantly higher level. I guess there aren't many level 1 sunbros around :)

Sounds about right for Irithyll. In your defence I'll say that the difficulty of the game is pretty much at it's peak in this area so if you can get through this then you will have no problems completing the game.

Slightly OT:
How far did you got with DS3? I have now 60 hours into the game and reached Central Irithyll with all bosses before that taken down, though with a lot of guidance from youtube walkthrough. Actually I'm about to give up since it is such a hard game (although never unfair and really really well made).

Got 165 hours according to Steam. Completed the game three times (NG+3) with my main character and did quite a lot of multiplayer as well. Levelled up my character a bit too much (lv181) which I regret because it affects multiplayer matchmaking. People who make pvp characters and such tend to aim for lv120.

I think the first time I completed it was around the 60h mark, but as you get to know the game it can be done much faster. Also I'm hunting Steam achievements. Only missing five now (sorceries, miracles, rings, expressions and The Dark Soul) :D

Just made a new character earlier this evening to try to complete the game without levelling up a single time. Got to Cathedral of the Deep but had to take a break as it got quite frustrating running around on the roof of the cathedral and getting ganged up on. Wasn't too much of a challenge up until then though, surprisingly. I know some people have completed the game at level 1 so I thought it might be an interesting challenge to spice things up a bit :)

And now I realise it sounds like I'm bragging. Sorry about that, I'll stop right away :P

If it gets too frustrating, make sure your weapon is upgraded as much as possible as it makes a huge difference. Maybe pop an ember and summon some sunbros to help out, although be aware that bosses are buffed when you call in phantoms. Manage the stamina bar and don't get greedy. Maybe try and change up your strategy, like rolling instead of blocking. Blocking costs a lot of stamina and rolling gives you a few invincibility frames so if it's timed right you don't take any damage even if it looks like you are getting hit.

Epic loves to market their engine as multi-platform and Linux-compatible, but it really is true that they don't care about Linux and treat it as a second class citizen. Sad. :'(

You will have to up your refresh rate requirement if you want the super important Low Framerate Compensation (LFC). Freesync is basically useless without it. For LFC to work the upper rate must be >2.5 times higher than the lower rate which pretty much disqualifies anything less than 90hz. But then again, it will be impossible to find anything like that at the price you suggested.
