Also looking forward to this game... ONL had been pretty underwhelming, except maybe "Cronos: The New Dawn" it seemed to me just more and more of the same, so many sequels...

NVIDIA 580.76.05 released for Linux as the new recommended stable driver
13 Aug 2025 at 8:54 am UTC Likes: 2

tl;dr use 550 for VR and Monado with recent presentation env vars.

The 580 driver is probably great for pancake (=non VR) use, but for VR it's better to use 550.
If you are using the Valve Index and a game maxes out your GPU, heavy stutters occur. Steam VR has issues with async reprojection since Steam VR 2.0, and though it's technically working again with nVidia, it's still not giving the experience it should.

Instead Monado got recently some fixes that adressed the headset tracking latency (the image is a few ms behind your movement, and it feels like swimming in VR) and in general its async reprojection implementation is much better than Steam VR's, yet since driver 555 (and up to 580) apparently the driver is not giving priority to async reprojection which then results in stutters in VR. These don't happen with 550.

This thread has most of the information and also mentions the needed env vars for Monado:

Linux GPU Configuration And Monitoring Tool (LACT) gets expanded support for older AMD GPUs
8 Aug 2025 at 8:58 pm UTC

I've installed LACT as I got adviced to use it for VR, there should be a VR profile, but for me on nVidia (2080 and 3070) there are no profiles at all. Has anyone use this and has profiles?
Someone stated SteamVR on Linux is putting the GPU into a kinda save mode periodically and that profile would change that. Yet, I've not been able to find a VR profile neither in LACT nor in corectl.
Any help would be appreciated.

Portal: Revolution drops Native Linux support to focus on Proton
6 Aug 2025 at 9:36 am UTC Likes: 2

And now we got used to it. And it's interesting to see how it changes over time. I remember when people got upset, because of Proton in general. Then it was okay, because we could still play those games. Then people got upset because drops of native builds. Damn, the backlash Rockfish Games got, because they couldn't fix the performance issues in UE5 for Linux and went the Proton way. Sure, mostly a minority, yet pretty vocal.
It has proven to be benefical for Linux to be able to play games through Proton. It's the success the Steam Deck builds upon.
If a dev goes the way to support a native build, they have my special gratitude. If they decide to drop the native build but still make sure it works with Proton, I'm all ears.

What do we want? Playing games! Where do we want to play them? On Linux! Can we do that? YES!

Hey, maybe I'll finally actually go through it all the way now. Seems like a good time to do it.
Absolutely! I had been already good with patch 1.6 when I started to play it... and it got better and better. Haven't played the DLC yet, I'm already looking forward to play it when I find the time.
CDPR really knows how to tell stories, shape characters... aww, I envy you playing this for the first time. This game is a great experience!

Split-screen game launcher for Linux / SteamOS adds support for multiple keyboards and mice
15 Jul 2025 at 2:39 am UTC

Are two copies of a game necessary then? Would it need something like steam family sharing if multiple copies are needed?
This seems like an interesting idea, yet I'm wondering how this works. Won't it mess up with game profiles or so?

Bazzite gets a new app store, newly supported devices, improved WiFi and more
8 Jul 2025 at 1:39 pm UTC

Though I'm still a big fan of the Steam Deck, since I installed Bazzite on the ROG Ally (2023) and on the Legion Go (not S), I'm using those devices more than before. I do have some issues on the ROG Ally though, e.g. I get controller disconnects from time to time in No Man's Sky and Fall Guys. For No Man's Sky there is a workaround by opening the virtual keyboard shortly, for Fall Guys I have to restart the game. Sometimes twice. This did not happen on the Legion Go so far.

I was lucky to aquire the XG Mobile 6850M XT (2022) for the Ally and it works also on Linux (I still boot into Windows to enable it via Armory Crate though), and I'd like to get VR running there too. So far I wasn't able to get VR running in desktop mode, but I haven't tinkered enough with it yet. On Windows Mini-Corben was enjoying VR via Steam Link and his Quest 3S already a lot.

I thought about installing Chimera OS first, yet Bazzite seems to have taken the lead on PC gaming handhelds?

The only issue with installing Bazzite I had was shrinking the Windows partition  (so it's not a Bazzite issue). Eventually with using the free and foss version of UltraDefrag I was able to move those unmovable files.
Otherwise the installer went smooth (needs a keyboard/mouse attached though), it just took the free space and did its thing.

Bazzite is running really great on the ROG Ally and Legion Go, and the HandHeld Deamon tool works splendid to limit battery charge to 80%, configure the RGB lights and boot back into Windows (for whatever reason).
