Uh... when will we get some great news in the Linux gaming scene again?
With proton there was a giant leap taken, was it too big for everything to catch up?
Before proton, we got some great triple A titles here and there. We could handle it. Now the amount of announcements or releases of those titles have decreased. At least that's my feeling. And even worse, we hear lots of "news" that Linux support is dropped, will be dropped or "paused". Some of them caused by Epic and their exclusives, cutting us off even from titles that work with proton.
We can play now many single player titles, especially thanks to proton, more than we have time to play... but with more titles our demand also increases, especially for multiplayer titles. And most (big) games make the (big) money with multiplayer... but we are cut off... yeah, I have a bad feeling for Linux gaming in the near future. If we lose that little momentum we had, Linux gaming will stagnate, and stagnation means rip.
Sorry to sound that pessimistic, I'm just starting to worry more and more with all those negative news...

This is how it has to start, I guess. We were playing games with wine way before Valve decided to support Linux natively. And this showed them there is interest. Then Microsoft did its store thing, and game platforms where looking for alternatives. Without wine we wouldn't have that I guess. So yeah, I think it's a good start that the Epic client is now working properly on Linux via a compatibility layer. Which may lead then to a native client sooner or later, especially as Epic is looking for Linux engineers. And I guess not only for backend stuff.
I know we prefer a proper native support, I do this as well. But being able to play now games, that are known to work well with wine+dxvk (e.g. Metro Exodus), it's at least something.
edit: will we see a community driven project like protondb for games that work with wine/dxvk from the epic store soon, or with this be listed on winehq?

I have to rant a bit. It's not regarding Borderlands 2, but Borderlands 1 GotY (non enhanced, non remastered):
My girlfriend and I both got the game several years ago... at that time I was dualbooting to play games that didn't work on Linux at all. Like Borderlands with its securom protection.
Now I've read that the Steam version of Borderlands GotY seems to work pretty well with Proton. I just need to get the game into Steam. And google points to this url [External Link], explaining how to convert your retail copy to a Steam version. Great! Well, turns out, it would have been great 10 days ago.
Because they've shutted down that tool on 2019-03-27. I got linked to this page [External Link], where they "informed the community" in Feburary. I didn't even know about this tool until last week, and of course I didn't know about that announcement.
Looking at this thread [External Link] on Steam, I'm not the only one missing either that tool or that announcement. And they also shutted down the securom servers, validating your copy.
This leaves us with a paid but now completely useless game. Thanks 2k. I hope enough people complain about this, so they re-enable this tool. But I'm afraid they just don't care about those few customers having this issue.

The open source livestreaming and recording software OBS Studio has a new release out

But looks like there are no Linux builds for OBS 23.1 yet? The homepage states 23.0.2 as latest version for Linux.

Quoting: 14How are you re-using one source for multiple games? The Windows version has a way to stream whatever is full-screen. Are you changing the properties of the source every time you start a new stream or recording? For our weekly gaming stream, I'm using one scene, but added each game separately as a source. If the game is not running, it doesn't matter, that source is just not shown or transparent. The first time setup is a bit annoying, but after a while you have all games added and it's just working then.
EDIT: I suppose you might be capturing the entire screen, which I prefer to avoid I guess.

Steam Play was updated again with Proton 4.2-2

The only game I got working, though it has CEG protection, is Aliens vs Predator from 2010. But with some workarounds. So you have to download or check file integrity of the game via wine steam or windows on that hardware, and then you need to fake the date. But once you figured that out, it works like a charm.
There are other CEG protected games, like Duke Nukem Forever, which works flawless in wine (I just tried it yesterday), but not at all with proton. See the corresponding thread on the proton github issue tracker [External Link].

Quoting: gradyvuckovicLooks like Dead Pool [External Link] is CEG (custom executable generation) protected. And this seems not to work with the Linux Steam client. It neither downloads a working custom executable signed for your hardware, nor does the checking work properly. Which is a shame, as most of those games are old and probably won't never get updated again, but work flawless in wine steam. So if Valve would fix that, those games could be whitelisted immediately.Quoting: Sil_el_motNice.I've tried, no joy. :<
Sidequestion: Did anybody managed to get the game Deadpool working? Unfortunately there is no entry in the Protondb for it.

No Man's Sky runs very nicely on Linux with Steam Play, huge online feature update and VR support coming

I'd like to know if they changed the graphics API. Before it was OpenGL for sure, which worked great on Linux with wine and later with proton. But for VR I guess they had to change to a more recent API. I guess it's Vulkan, but couldn't find anything so far. Well, I bet it'll still be working fine with Steam Play.
I'm a No Man's Sky fan from the beginning. Space games are my very genre ;) And it's so cool how far they've come with their updates. And it's impressive they still release those huge updates for free.

Well, regarding to Sergey Galyonkin's tweet [External Link], they are looking for Linux engineers. In that thread it's about getting Pheonix Point to run on Linux... via proton or wine or whatever. So it might be related to getting Epic's Launcher to work in wine, or maybe a native Client. Or something completely different, as they probably need also Linux engineers for their back end stuff.
At least this sounds way less against Linux than they don't plan to support Linux at all.
Yeah, fingers crossed they'll support Linux with games and clients in the future. If I got that right, they do have enough money to help Linux gaming if they want to. Even though it's not giving a net positive for the first time.

Well, with Marc Di Luzio (formerly working at Feral) working at Unity to improve Linux support, I hope they won't have any issues when it comes to the platform finalization ;) Fingers crossed! Looking forward to play both, the crowdfunded reboot as well as the successor.
