ChimeraOS Linux 48 brings new hardware support for your handhelds and living room PCs

This one is really interesting (to me)
  • Added support for ROG XG Mobile external GPUs
Hm... just as I got bazzite installed on the ROG Ally
I was never a distro hopper, but maybe on handheld pcs I'll become one :woot:

Noclip are doing a 4-part documentary on Dwarf Fortress with part 1 up now
24 Mar 2025 at 1:01 pm UTC

Those game or gamedev documentaries are great. The first I saw was "Indie Game: The Movie" and found it very inspirational, then the Minecraft documentary, the DotA 2 documentary "Free To Play" and several game jams documentaries. The Noclip channel on youtube is a good entry point for those kinds of documentaries.
Unfortuantely the Minecraft one seems gone? I can't find it on youtube anymore.

Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS now on Best Buy for pre-order with Ryzen Z1 Extreme or Ryzen Z2 Go
20 Mar 2025 at 1:50 pm UTC Likes: 3

Looks like the Z2 Go is quite behind the Z1 Extreme performance-wise. As I got 2 devices with a Z1 Extreme (ROG Ally, Legion Go) I'm passing on the Go S (even with Z1 Extreme), as the performance won't be much different.
Currently I'm gaining experience with Bazzite on the Ally (and there are quite minor issues), haven't installed it on the Legion Go yet. Maybe I'll even wait for Steam OS to be ready for the old Go.

The haptics/ergonomics of the Go S seem pretty good though, at least from what I can see from the pictures. The ROG Ally is too thin, after an hour my hands start aching from holding the Ally. And the Legion Go is too clunky and too heavy.

Maybe the Go S can score with good haptics/ergonomics compared to the other non-Steam Deck PC gaming handheld devices. Also nice to see the price difference a Windows license does cost.

I got the native Linux version from their website already. Hmm... wouldn't be the first game that I buy again, just to have the convenience of the Steam ecosystem

I hope Valve are watching closely with Microsoft working towards an Xbox Handheld
12 Mar 2025 at 11:49 am UTC Likes: 7

Microsoft does what they always do... being late to the party. And then throwing so much money at it that others can't compete anymore. They don't invent themselves, they let invent and then they buy it or copy it using their huge money montains.

Microsoft is still doing a great job priming people since school to use Windows. Yet there are more people realizing the path Microsoft has chosing with each iteration of their OS is not what they want.

E.g. in our little gaming group I've been the only one playing my games on Linux whenever possible for years. Now we are four people playing on Linux. And I didn't even have to convince them. Microsoft did that for me :woot:

Nevertheless, I do see some danger Will Robinson here. Microsoft can just burry things with their money. They can sit things out.

I've now finally installed bazzite on my ROG Ally, and though it's great, it's not as smooth and pleasant to use as Steam OS is. Now I can understand why Valve needs time to improve Steam OS to work really smooth on other devices.

Warhammer: Vermintide 2 gets an Easy Anti-Cheat upgrade - finally works properly on Linux
4 Mar 2025 at 2:53 pm UTC

Nice to see!

We still can only officially support Windows 10 & 11, but nonetheless there might be one barrier less in that aspect.
Hm, this make me wonder if this is an indirect innuendo to support Linux? They don't mean Windows 7, 8 or other predecessors, right?

I'm also wondering in which regard the EOS EAC variant is different to the old EAC that needs a local dll file. Is that dll now just directly integrated into the game so a seperate file isn't needed anymore? Or does it actually mean cheat detection happens server side? If the latter, did Apex Legends have alread EOS EAC or dll EAC and would that help bringing it back to support Linux again?

Metro devs 4A Games Ukraine rebrand as Reburn and reveal futuristic sci-fi shooter La Quimera
28 Feb 2025 at 4:54 pm UTC

The trailer gave me quite some Crysis vibes.
Story driven FPS? Nice! Coop? Nicer! Maybe Linux support (native, Proton, Deck)? Nicest!

From the past of 4A Games, I have high hopes Reburn will give Linux gamers some love too.

Steam Deck Folio is a slim protective travel cover that doubles up as a stand
26 Feb 2025 at 12:00 pm UTC

Backed. This is a nice addon to the Deck. Just wondering if you keep it attached on the back, if it still doesn't block cooling. But having a stand this slim is really nice. And those slim stands are really rare. Back then I supported the "Tiny Tower Stand", which is not available anymore. Yet I'm still using it after 6 years it got released.
I hope for something long-lasting with the Folio as well.

NVIDIA Beta driver 570.86.16 released with VRR for multiple displays and lots of improvements
31 Jan 2025 at 7:18 am UTC

Implemented a feature that allows low latency display interrupts to be serviced even when the system is under heavy contention.
This is especially useful for reducing stutter when using virtual reality.
This feature is experimental and disabled by default.
This feature can be enabled by loading nvidia.ko with the `NVreg_RegistryDwords=RMIntrLockingMode=1` kernel module parameter.
This should mitigate the stutter that was introduced when they enabled the GSP firmware by default with driver 555 when using Steam VR. As the Ubuntu PPA doesn't build beta drivers, I'll have to wait for this to come into the stable release.

Also the nvidia 570 driver isn't whitelisted for i386 yet:
