That didn't last long - the Junk Store for Steam Deck has its Steam page removed (updated)
16 Oct 2024 at 9:19 am UTC

Looks like there is a demand, a certain audience (probably mostly us Linux players wanting that one-fits-all solution) that's interested in an easy way to play all games (including from other stores). An idea would now be, that Valves implements modding support for the client. What are the modifications needed for Junk Store? Is it possible to provide these to them in an official way? We know there are officially "altered" steam clients (at least using something that's not obvious to the normal customer), like the one that nVidia's GeForce Now uses.

Quoting: TheRiddickNot really sure what the issue is since you can add non-steam games to Steam library and also run them with proton.
Convenience. Not having to do it manually through Heroic or so. Sure, it's only one or two extra steps, yet the less you need to do on your own, the easier.

NVIDIA users also need to upgrade at least to driver version 550.54.14.
I know this is beta but this would be kinda difficult to me to achieve ☺️

550.54.14 was released back in February. The PPA [External Link] is your friend, although it really shouldn't be needed.
Small hint: 32 bit packages for nvidia-driver-560 in focal (20.04) and jammy (22.04) are missing in the PPA currently. They are present in noble (24.04).
Related to OBS it's not relevant if support for pre 24.04 has been dropped anyway.

Gamescope gets improved ROG Ally support hinting at more progress for SteamOS
8 Oct 2024 at 12:05 pm UTC

When they release it for the first ROG Ally, I hope they add support for the egpu. That's what's still holding me off to install something like bazzite. There seem to be ways to get it running, and I think this is a great space-saving setup, especially as it can run VR then.

Creative Assembly confirm Alien: Isolation is getting a sequel

Back then when Alien: Isolation was announced, we could have a first look at gamescom. Oh my gosh! My knees were shaking when playing this. I knew what this organism is capable of and it scared the sh!t out of me. My sister screamed through the whole booth when one of the booth employees scared her during her playsession.
And then the game was released, gosh... it was soo good!
And we even got a native Linux port from Feral Interactive!

I've been longing for more content of the Alien (and Predator) franchise. The newer movies, well, have been great for fans (like me), except Alien: Romulus which seems to be well accepted by the majorty even. Alien: Earth as a tv show is being aired soon. We got quite some games over the recent years even, with Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Aliens: Dark Descent and even Alien: Rogue Incursion as a proper VR game on the horizon. We are still playing Aliens vs Predator (2010) and even Aliens: Colonial Marines in multiplayer on a regular basis.

Hopefully the sequal will be similar in tension and quality as the first game. The expectations are really high. I'm looking forward to the continuing story of Amanda Ripley.

Frame of Mind developer ended up coding the game on Steam Deck for a year

The SteamOS + Linux system requirements are funny :D

Minimum:
OS: when in doubt, check if you can run godot 4

Recommended:
Graphics: will run better on dedicated GPUs
Cool to see another example of the Deck being used productively and not only for gaming.

Grand Theft Auto V gets BattlEye anti-cheat, breaks online play on Steam Deck / Linux
18 Sep 2024 at 8:13 am UTC Likes: 1

Actually I played GTA V only in multiplayer so far, funmaps only, no GTA online. Haven't touched the singleplayer at all. Not only on Linux desktop PC, but also a lot on Deck. I saw the online games being full of cheaters, but that has been the case for over 10 years. Why do they add it now? GTA V is 11 years old. It's nice to see it still being supported, but what's their motivation to add it now? Do they really expect to make many more sales? GTA 6 was announced, scheduled next year (probably postponed, but still). Those who want GTA (V) have it already, and all their updates had been free which is cool, so do they intend to sell the next update?
Hopefully they'll just send that email, as the game itself runs great on Linux and Deck.

Celebrating 6 years since Valve announced Steam Play Proton for Linux
22 Aug 2024 at 8:28 am UTC Likes: 6

How this changed everything. Incredible. John Carmack stated back then this is the way to get Linux gaming popular. And we laughed. Proton got released and a lot of Linux fans got mad because this would kill native versions.
Yet we can now play more games than ever before on our favorite OS. Be it on PC handhelds, where Valve managed to create the best experience with Steam OS, we can play VR (currently all games are working again, at least for me)... and so much more. On the marketshare sites and Valve's own stats page Linux has outperformed Mac since a while now.
People install Linux on Windows only PC gaming handhelds with Chimera OS, bazzite, etc because it's the better experience.
Wow. Thanks Valve, thanks to all contributors, what a time to be alive as a Linux gamer.

SteamOS 3.6.9 Beta for Steam Deck curiously mentions the ASUS ROG Ally

from Lawrence Yang on The Verge [External Link]

The note about ROG Ally keys is related to third-party device support for SteamOS. The team is continuing to work on adding support for additional handhelds on SteamOS
Okay! This is indeed official support for SteamOS from Valve for other devices than the Steam Deck. Awesome!

Is Chimera OS or Bazzite pulling stuff from Steam OS? Maybe that's the idea behind it. What purpose do these fixes have otherwise in Steam OS?
