How do you even know if they're bad if you haven't played them? I'll give you a couple of them, but ALL of them? SteamWorld Dig was excellent. It even got GOTY nominations (maybe even won, I don't recall)... And you're saying it's bad... Without even having tried it. Defender's Quest is compelling. I'd agree that it doesn't LOOK good - I avoided it for too long because I didn't care for the art. But one day I tried the demo and it hooked me.

Just because a game's graphics aren't AAA-level doesn't mean the gameplay won't be equal or better. (And SteamWorld Dig's 2D art did look excellent, at least on my TV - so I'm not saying all of the listed games look bad.)

If any of the developers happen by here and read this - thank you so much for supporting Linux! Even if I haven't bought your game yet, I probably plan to - or else it's really just not my style (and I hope you understand...).

Out of the games listed that I haven't got yet, I really want Rust, but I'm quite hesitant with Early Access games these days. I have to question how that label affects others on all the platforms, as well. Secrets of Raetikon as well (and Starbound, though it's not in the article). With stat resets and bugs and missing features being the norm (often even in "finished" games...), I tend to want to wait it out a bit.

But I'm glad it seems to be fairly positive from all the developers' points of view. I'd love to hear more, and some follow-up later on after Steam Machines have been released for a while.

My main regrets are that a) I can't buy every game (can I..?), and b) I don't have time to play all of the games I already bought!

For sure. Look at the Torque3D open-source effort - that was also released under MIT, and we don't even have a working, ready Linux port of the editor last time I checked. And that is quite dated now anyhow. But I have better feelings about Godot.

All the engines have to start somewhere. Godot has shipped games on various platforms, but nothing in, say, Steam or Humble that I could find. But there's a Godot Engine game on Android called Anthill. Check that out. It's 2D, but I liked the polish on it. It's just one game, but it's something, and the Lite version is free to check out.

Regarding the engines, I really, really, REALLY hope Godot Engine catches on when it opens up next month. I've only poked around in it for a couple hours so far, but what I see, I like. It came at the perfect time, too. I had just emailed Unity about a Linux editor and their response was "No, but you can export from Windows." No thanks. They say Godot has better 2D than Unity, while the 3D is a little less developed, compared to Unity. That's fine for me, as I've never really done any 3D stuff before. I'll certainly look at it, though.

I do appreciate Unity supporting Linux as an export option, but I can't help but feel they're dropping the ball, here. They almost had my money, and I don't even have a good game idea in my mind yet - I am just toying with the idea. But thanks to OKAM Studio, I get to keep my money and evaluate making games again. It's been years...

Leadwerks might be a good alternative, too. I'm keeping it in mind, at least. But for now, my money's on Godot. Well, not money. But. You know what I mean.

AA batteries are the right choice, at least as long as the hardware is good. My Logitech F710 has been running the same two AA batteries for months... Never did my PS3 controllers ever last that long.

I am disappointed to hear about this d-pad/ABXY crap, though I need to see it to understand it.

Edit: that live feed embedded in the post is super annoying to try and scroll through. Can you filter out the retweets?

Yep, I played some HOARD last night. Good times! I remember playing it on PSP and PS3 a few years ago.

Papo & Yo does have Steam integration, so it's hopefully just a matter of time before it pops up. I added it as a non-Steam game and the overlay works, time is tracked, and probably achievements would unlock if I'd played it long enough to get one. (To see the time tracking, you have to go to the actual Steam game entry in your library list, not the entry you add manually).

Yep, I hadn't heard that until today myself. Actually, it was Gabe who said it in the press conference. They haven't decided. I think if they do make them, and the price is on the low side, the 13 hardware partners will probably lose out, because I know if I'm buying a Steam Machine, I want it from the company that makes Steam. Maybe that's just me... But if they end up deciding not to, or if they're priced too high but a partner offers one that is better than what I could build for the same dollars, then I may go that route.

Also, SteamOS (beta branch) now supports AMD cards, and the companies are banking on AMD getting their act together between now and hardware release later this year, so no, the AMD-containing machines are not a mistake. Or at least, they're hoping they won't be a mistake... I'm still skeptical. But I'd love to see AMD offer a real alternative to NVIDIA for Linux users.

Try installing the terminal program called "terminator" and run Steam from there, and then launch the game. For some unknown reason, this often works. Hopefully the new drivers will come out soon... I downgraded to 304.x and haven't had issues since.
