Cities In Motion 2 Shows Up In Steam For Linux

Quoting: Quote from pwburkhardtLooks quiet interesting, but id rather want to see a complete city building simulator (like Sim City) on Linux.
Me too, I can't think of a really good city builder that we have :(
I haven't played Lincity in a long, long time, but I remember it being kinda cool.

Valve Apparently Has 12 Partners So Far For Steam Machines
8 Jan 2014 at 3:46 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from BumaDigital storm. one of the manufacturer has already announced they will make a dual boot machine, so it has windows and steam os and thus they can call it a steam box.  Reality will be that users will probably use windows then to run steam on in big picture mode since all games are supported natively.
As Liam pointed out elsewhere, it shouldn't even qualify as a Steam Machine, considering it is not shipping with SteamOS *or* a Steam Controller... It's just a Windows PC with the Steam Machine label. No Controller, no optimized gaming OS. I'm sorry, but, "well, later on we will put SteamOS on it too, and include a Controller, I guess..." is pretty damn lame. For what reason would they be shipping it this month, as-is, with just Windows on it? It's just stupid and pointless. Why would anyone buy one of these, if they actually want a Steam Machine? There is no reason.

I'm still debating which one I will buy, if I do in fact buy one instead of building one myself. But one thing is for sure: Digital Storm is out, due to their complete lack of commitment to the entire concept of Steam Machines.

Okay, two things are for sure: OriginPC is also out of the running. I'm not buying anything with Windows on it.

First Generation Steam Machines Revealed
7 Jan 2014 at 5:58 pm UTC

Didn't Valve say they aren't making Steam Machines themselves, outside of the beta units?

Depending on the price and specs, I am probably most interested in the Alienware Steam Machine, though at that size, it most certainly won't be upgradeable in any meaningful way. So that's a big consideration for me. At least in the future it could still stream games from a more powerful Steam Machine or PC, so I guess there's that.

I also like iBuyPower's design in black, and with the light set to a SteamOS-blue. I think that would look nice in my living room...

On the other hand, I kinda just want Valve's reference design, even without a GPU so I can stick my own in.

Man Fight Dragon On Game Developing & Porting To Linux

That was a really cool blog post. I skipped a lot of the Mac stuff because I don't care, but it's actually kinda neat that someone out there is even still using QBASIC.

Valve Apparently Has 12 Partners So Far For Steam Machines

Quoting: Quote from tuxisagamerI'm waiting to see the prices and hardware specs to determine whether to build my own or buy a Steam Machine.
Same here, though I really do expect to find at least some of the offerings will be cheaper than building with identical components due to their bulk purchasing power vs retail markups. The Steam Controller bundled in will eat probably at least $50 alone, I'd wager more.

Godot Game Engine Going Open Source
5 Jan 2014 at 10:24 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from ZapaOn the gamedev.net topic the author is asking for people to help out with testing the engine, looking for grammar mistakes and/or other problems. I dropped them an email as it seems extremely interesting. Hopefully this will allow more developers to switch to Linux as a development environment.
I've been using it for a couple days, not very much mind you, but looking at the tutorials and reference material on the wiki. I really like what I've seen! I sent an email last night with a couple little tweaks to make to language, but it's really the docs that need more input. I've requested access to edit them, but haven't heard back yet.

It's been many years since I worked on game development, and I always did just 2D stuff from scratch (with SDL libraries, vim editor), no engine experience. This has me really excited, and it seems well thought-out. Currently the 3D stuff is geared towards GLES, but if the community forms, I expect it'll improve rapidly and dramatically. The whole thing is bringing back memories of when Blender opened up (I still remember the thermometer graph, haha).

I even started the godot subreddit not long ago, in hopes that this whole thing takes off.

Edit: the Torque 3D engine is also under the MIT license and I read that a Linux port it in the works, but it's been a slow road. Godot looks better from what I've seen, anyhow. I do remember buying a few Linux games years ago made with one of the Torque engines, but I can't remember what they were off the top of my head. Also, if you have an Android device, search for "Anthill Lite" and try out that 2D game, which was made with Godot Engine.

That was my immediate thought, too.

Magicite A 2D Multiplayer RPG To Hit Steam Early Access This Month
2 Jan 2014 at 3:31 pm UTC

It could be really fun, judging from those clips. But it would look better in a hand-drawn art style. Think of The Behemoth's games. *sigh*

Have a great new year Linux gamers!
31 Dec 2013 at 3:37 pm UTC

Gaming-wise, I'm looking forward to the official Steam Machine details, and launch. I really want that Controller, and hoping there's a Steam Machine priced just right for my needs.

Happy new year!
