People really need to stop even referring to the Steam Hardware Survey as any sort of statistic. It's a survey, and an optional and non-voluntary one at that, about hardware, not operating systems.

Since Pornhub is the only non-tech site listed here, that's obviously the one that most accurately reflects the general public and the one I'll be quoting in the future ;P

Couldn't agree more! What really sold me on Wine, was when I realised I was running games such as Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines, System Shock 2 and other older games without any issue on Linux and hadn't even realised that users on the games' native platform Windows were struggling or unable to do the same; now _that_ is amazing!

For being a fall-back mode, that is surprisingly well executed! If the game had released with this mode exclusively, I wouldn't have thought twice about it, that's how good it looks.

Would love to see Wasteland 2 and Satellite Reign updated to use the Vulkan renderer - those two could use a few extra FPS.

Oh, that's great! I bought it a while ago, but haven't gotten around to playing it yet, fearing the difficulty; no more! :D

EDIT: Has anyone gotten it to work? I'm not seeing any new difficulty modes after installing the DLC.

EDIT 2: It required a restart of Steam to be applied, in case anyone stumbles on the same issue.

It's not incredibly useful though, as they all just put your screen in front of you, whereas I was hoping for a way to have it placed in a virtual theatre for films or to be able to watch 3D or 360 videos, neither of which works.

In the end, 2020 we'll rather see Vulkan/DX12 things popping out than having D3D9 or even 11 being used, since most engines will be there by then.

But yet, for Wine which already does all this (basically, providing a WINAPI, HRESULT, IDirect3D9* stuff and windows event handler / STDMETHODCALLTYPE etc.), it may be a good starting point if they wanted to do a d3d9 to vulkan mapping.

If this matures, it means that GPU vendors can stop worrying about D3D9 support in their future drivers, putting all their focus on Vulkan support, which is good news for us.
As others have stated, it would also help Wine eventually.

You did just describe what market share is ;)

Well, I'll have to disagree. Market share is the percentage of income earned by a company, in this case from Linux users, and that's not what the Steam Hardware Survey gathers information on. If the article was reporting on a report from Valve showing that there was a drop in Linux game sales, or similar, then the headline would be accurate, as it is, the survey just shows a drop in number of Linux users subjected to or answering the survey, which may or may not be related to actual market share.
