Valve show the Steam Controller being built, and future software updates

Sure, but I don't think it has to do with the device itself, it sounds like an issue with the Steam client to me.
Here's my udev file anyway:
Quoting: /lib/udev/rules.d/99-steam-controller-perms.rules# Valve USB devices
SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTRS{idVendor}=="28de", MODE="0666"
# Steam Controller udev write access
KERNEL=="uinput", SUBSYSTEM=="misc", TAG+="uaccess"
# HTC Vive HID Sensor naming and permissioning
KERNEL=="hidraw*", SUBSYSTEM=="hidraw", ATTRS{idVendor}=="0bb4", ATTRS{idProduct}=="2c87", MODE="0666"
I should note that I also did the /dev/uinput access trick by installing python3-autopilot ("sudo apt-get install python3-autopilot" ).

Quoting: Friendly TrollDoes anyone else have a completely non functioning Steam Controller? I have Ubuntu 15.10, Steam Beta client and everytime I go to play a game there are no community configs to select from. I can't even save my own configuration, because it says something like "another configuration is already in process of saving it" which is of course not true.

Also sometimes when I quit Big picture mode the entire desktop freezes. Only sudo service lightdm restart helps.
I don't have anything like that, but I do get the already-saving error, which just goes away if I try again. My guess would be that the permissions on your steam folder could be messed up. Have you checked that your user can write to ~/.steam/steam/userdata and its subfolders and that you have enough disk space?

Another good thing they are planning is to actually allow some configuration of it for desktop use, with an on-screen keyboard. They specifically mentioned people using it for a media PC
Well, the on-screen keyboard already works in desktop mode (press the stick) and I think the media controls buttons on the key select screen are new, so it's pretty much here already :D

Better config sharing and community configs for non-Steam games is awesome; access to a joined pool of all your configs would be great as well, so one can have, for example, the same config for all one's FPS games.

It is coming, just no idea on when:

Oh damn! I completely missed that! I just kept seeing the Windows logo on the Steam pre-order page and that made me not want to look more into it out of sheer disappointment. Stupid Windows logo... *grumble*

Quoting: BonsWhat to you guys think?,If you see this from a average consumer perspective for once, and don´t look with you Linux glasses on.
3 Reasons Steam Machines are better than Sony and MS consoles and 1 day someone will remind "average consumers" they at least have a choice now (which is better than no choice)! [...]
Precisely. I think everyone has to remember to see the bigger picture here. This is much less about Windows vs SteamOS/Linux and much more about getting rid of proprietary console platforms and exclusives and levelling the playing field for the consumer; meaning (in the future) if a game comes out, it comes out for your "PC" and for your SteamOS console, no more vendor lock-in and, hopefully when Vulcan arrives, no more bad "console ports" (like the latest Batman).

Sublevel Zero, A First-person Roguelike Six-degree-of-freedom Shooter Released For SteamOS & Linux

Quoting: PublicNuisanceI give every new game 3 months before I even think of buying them and this is why. Not saying I think releasing games in this state is alright, just that it's what I have come to expect. Hopefully patches are in route.
Patches are already in; it's working.

It runs now. There's a bit of visual flickering with dynamic lights enabled and there's no Steam Controller support, but it works.

A Four Way Comparison For Alien: Isolation Shows Off The Performance Difference

Quoting: nattydreadWhy is openGL slower under linux than windows?
I'm surprised by that!

Thanks for all the answers!
It's not, but the game-specific optimisations that are in the Windows driver are not enabled in the Linux driver.
Apart from that, depending on how the game is written, the performance will differ between Linux and Windows, sometimes better on Linux, sometimes better on Windows. Here are some recent test results as an example. [External Link]

Alienware Interview Video About Their Steam Machine, SteamOS & The Future

The one thing that made me really chuckle, was talk about performance. According to the Alienware rep there's no performance "degradation" on SteamOS. We all know most ports perform worse than they do on Windows, so it's marketing speak at its finest. Again, Vulkan is going to certainly help, as will Alienware/Valve and others talking directly to Nvidia/AMD/Intel to improve their drivers for OpenGL too.
To be fair, he does seem to mean performance degradation at the driver level, which seems correct.
