I think that was a good thing that that kind of things happened.
Honestly, a video where everything worked exactly as intended would have been very boring and unmemorable.
With a month of footage, I expect to see a few other bombastic moments, which is great.
That might encourage more users to try the challenge see if they can do better, and maybe stick with Linux, if their experience is enjoyable.

Some hypothesis:
* Windows 7 end of life.
* With Covid19 people trying to revitalize their old hardware for the rest of the family.

To be fair with the chinese government, it seems that traditions and especially family pressure largely dwarf government pressure in the chinese society. I wouldn't be surprised if alleviation of that pressure was a goal of the government in quiet a number of cases.
OTOH, "a iron hand in a velvet glove" is very chinese thing. In other terms, the closer to the power you are, the more you will feel the iron, while the layman will feel (relatively) unaffected by the organisation of power.
You should also not make the mistake of taking the party for a monolithic hive mind under the direction of a petty idiot James Bond villain.

You can check the Wikipedia page on sound latency to have an interesting discussion on that subject. It seems that musicians and sound engineers have studied this for a long time.
For instance, each meters adds a 3ms sound latency; and, when earing your own voice, a 15ms latency is noticeable.
That gives you a little more respect for the work of musicians when they try to work together onstage.

A French court has ruled that Valve should allow people to re-sell their digital games

Assuming the ruling holds and Valve is doing something about it,
a plausible scenario would be:
* People keep the same budget for buying video games.
* Depending on how the resell price is distributed, publishers and valve end up with the same split of that pie.
* In the end, people pay the same thing to end up with a smaller library of games.
An other possible scenario would be:
* People reduce their gaming budget.

We're going more and more toward multi-core, multi-thread based applications. The cost of context switching might become problematic in the future.
Also dealing with calling convention, and change of calling convention is a PITA.

Quoting: GuestI like what they are doing. Maybe someday RISC-V would be a solution then it really could be properly open source.I'd rather they went for a stack based ISA instead of a registers based ISA.
I'm really looking forward to what they do with the laptops.

Those would fit into rustic interiors at least.
Gamer PCs are those who wouldn't fit in any interior IMO. I mean, they don't even fit into dark interiors... How can't you fit into dark interiors ?

I'm pretty disappointed by the general attitude here.
We've got a linux machine with mass market potential. We all know that the specs are good for the money, that the library is already consequent and that the proposed timetable is very workable.
From a purely technical perspective, this is a solid project.
Are there some uncertainties and shady elements? Of course!
Will such an occasion present itself again? Wait another ten years and see what happens.
If you want things to change, you've got to make the push when the occasion arise. If you don't want, at least don't undermine those who are willing to take risks by fighting pointless tribal wars.
