Double Fine On Linux Support
5 Nov 2013 at 10:41 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from HadBabitsEver since Psychonauts I've been a big fan of Double Fine. I'm really glad they've been so supportive :)

Wish I could say the same for Edmund of Team Meat :\
On the upside it looks like they might be working on some updates and bring Super Meat boy to Steam on Linux:

Double Fine On Linux Support

On the upside this should get better the more support Linux gets. Tools and drivers should improve (particularly with the Steam Machines coming).

That being said I am going to keep buying as many Linux ports as I can, as I want to ensure it is worth the developers time.

Quoting: Quote from tigerpanzerThis deal has gone sour, looks like Valve used us. It's a custom OS like Android with no assurance of compatibility with desktop Linux. And with no exclusive titles there is zero reason to even use it. Linux users should be outraged at the hope valve fed us when it was actually poison.
Only we don't know that for sure, you are speculating based on Limited information. We do know that it is custom but that doesn't mean it isn't compatible all we know is they didn't base it off another distro. If they were going down the route you are suggesting than what was the point of working with the Linux community at all? The could have gotten just as much vendor support without us? (possibly more considering how ready we as a community are to toss people under the bus without evidence).

Painkiller: Hell and Damnation FPS Game Now In Beta For Linux

Quoting: Quote from heleI'm not interested in Painkiller, but I'm wondering if Nordic Games can port Alan Wake and Gothic 3. I'd also appreciate Dungeon Lords MMXII.
Gothic 3 huuuuummmmm, lovely
I'm wondering why they chose Painkiller, because it's not the best game in their catalogue (quite mediocre actually).
Just because it is one of the few titles that put your skills over scripts doesn't mean it's "medicore game", I'd actually rate it 10/10.
More importantly than that, the best way to get studios to port more is to actually buy what they make available.

Total War: Rome II Will Be Ported To Linux
10 Oct 2013 at 3:26 pm UTC

Quoting: Quote from Xpanderso wikipedia is pure lies?

"Longtime Linux kernel developer Matthew Garrett criticized choice of licensing for Canonical's software projects, particularly Mir. Unlike X.Org Server and Wayland, both under MIT License, Mir is licensed under GPLv3 – "an odd one" for "GPLv3-hostile markets" – but contributors are required to sign an agreement that "grants Canonical the right to relicense your contribution under their choice of license. This means that, despite not being the sole copyright holder, Canonical are free to relicense your code under a proprietary license". He concludes that this creates asymmetry where "you end up with a situation that looks awfully like Canonical wanting to squash competition by making it impossible for anyone else to sell modified versions of Canonical's software in the same market".[30][31][32][33] Garrett’s concerns were echoed by Bradley M. Kuhn,[34][35] Executive Director of the Software Freedom Conservancy.[36]"
Seeing as both our sources are Wikipedia one of them is clearly wrong.

**Edit: seems both are correct, just read through the Harmony CLA:

(a) You retain ownership of the Copyright in Your
Contribution and have the same rights to use or license the
Contribution which You would have had without entering
into the Agreement.

(b) To the maximum extent permitted by the relevant law,
You grant to Us a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive,
transferable, royalty-free, irrevocable license under the
Copyright covering the Contribution, with the right to
sublicense such rights through multiple tiers of
sublicensees, to reproduce, modify, display, perform and
distribute the Contribution as part of the Material; provided
that this license is conditioned upon compliance with
Section 2.3.

Based on the grant of rights in Sections 2.1 and 2.2, if We
include Your Contribution in a Material, We may license the
Contribution under any license, including copyleft,
permissive, commercial, or proprietary licenses. As a
condition on the exercise of this right, We agree to also
license the Contribution under the terms of the license or
licenses which We are using for the Material on the
Submission Date.

Quoting: Quote from asdfWhat is the problem with Mir's license? Afaik, it is licensed under the GPL 3.
They are talking about Canonical's Contributor Licence Agreement. The previous version of it the Canonical contributor agreement had the owner assigned copyright to Canonical and understandably this annoyed some people.

However in 2011 changed to the Harmony CLA, this changed the CLA:

"the contributor gives Canonical a licence to use their contributions. The contributor continues to own the copyright in the contribution, with full rights to re-use, re-distribute, and continue modifying the contributed code, allowing them to also share that contribution with other projects."

Dota 2: How Does Ubuntu 13.04 Compare To Windows 8?
8 Oct 2013 at 1:27 am UTC

Quoting: Quote from SabunThat's a very generous offer tweakedenigma, thank you :)
I'm not sure how I'd take it though, since I'm pretty sure we live pretty far from one another. I don't want you to have to do anything illegal either (uploading it for redistribution or anything that's against it's EULA).

If there's anywhere I might be able to purchase it online for a reasonable price, that might be a better route to take.
Well if you want it you can have it, I don't mind shipping it. Just taking up room on my desk.

Dota 2: How Does Ubuntu 13.04 Compare To Windows 8?

Quoting: Quote from SabunI don't have ET:QW and it seems to have been removed from Steam, but I do have Quake 4. If I can figure out how to install that then I'll see how feasible it is to do a good test.

Might take a rest from doing the test videos for a couple of days though, since my hands are hurting quite a bit now.
I have an old copy of ET:QW on disk if you want it.
