GOG Preservation Program adds Heroes of Might and Magic titles and more
26 Jul 2025 at 2:13 am UTC Likes: 6

This GOG preservation program is the worst thing for Linux and preserving. If they referred people to run their games with Bottles and wine the game would be preserved but as is they are inserting their own libraries into the .exe file making the game unusable on Linux when the game worked perfectly fine before. I do not know but maybe there is a fork of wine that handles the custom .exe files. All I know was I learned this the hard way that GOG preservation is screwing games for Linux. I Dl a copy of HOMM3 from my GOG library and it didn't run after I installed the game. I tried both Playonlinux and Bottles which the game worked perfectly fine in before The game did not run now after an install. After some searching I found some ClI stuff to fix the dll or lib or whatever it is in the .exe but I found it easier to get working with Heroes HD. Heroes HD apparently works because it replaces the .exe with it's own .exe. When I got home I tried the back up I had on my NAS and it installed and ran fine preservation my arse GOG should stop screwing around and refer people to Linux to preserve.

Quoting: JHey,
I made the *critical* error of buying it on EPS, and I have only ever managed to get it to run once.

Does anyone know list of setting that will make it work via lutris / heroic or manual installation of EPS?

Sorry to have to ask for help, I had it working exactly once....

nvidia 460.73.01 with a 1650 Super (not expecting great perfomance but any playable setting will do)

thanks
Heroic Games Launcher works great with Epic games store. With Heroic Games Launcher you can select what version of proton you want to use as long as you have it installed with Steam.

@Liam Dawe You should have stats for people with multiple Linux computers. I have three Linux computers two mostly for gaming and one more for finances but still game on it but between the two gaming ones I play a lot on both. One gaming computer is Arch and the other is Pop!_OS. Both are AMD one is 8350FX and the other is Ryzen 5 both have AMD GPUs one 570 and the other 580. I still game a lot on my laptop which is I5 but mostly stuff like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 HD. Anyways I thought I would throw that out there to you.

Canonical planning to drop 32bit support with Ubuntu 19.10 onwards

Well if Pop_OS! and LinuxMint also drop 32 bit support I will have to switch to Debian, Solus, Manjaro, or another distro when the next LTS comes out kinda a bummer I was enjoying Ubuntu and learning it well guess I will have to pick up on the nuances of some other distros. who knows maybe I will be saying btw I use Arch lol.

Quoting: ripperI don't understand how you can install a GOG Windows game through Steam. In the screenshot in the article, the game is already installed, and you create a shortcut to run it through Steam. That's OK. But how do you install it, from a GOG installer, using Proton?

With GOG you don't need the client to download windows games. You can Download the windows games through the browser in you library. I have three windows games in my collection because I know they work with wine. Distraint, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Heroes of Might and Magic 4. But Ubuntu does have GOG Galaxy in their repository (it is the Windows version I think) so maybe it works with WINE too.

Paladins, the team-based shooter seems to work well with Steam Play

I found a post on protonDB that tells you how to remove the dot.net from installing. Just delete these 2 files UE3Redist_vs2010.exe UE3Redist_vs2012.exe UE3Redist_vs Once it got UE3 Redist delete them and it wont prompt for Net Framework 4 anymore Location /home/user/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Paladins/Binaries/Redist. Acoording to the poster this was also found on this website but here it is again. anyways it worked for me and I have no issues with Paladins.
