Guys, these people already ruined FreeBSD, and they will happily chase away every talented dev there is and burn Linux to the ground if it means they can rule over the ashes. Just going to leave this here : http://voxday.blogspot.com/2018/09/killswitch-linux-code-of-conduct.html [External Link]

'These losers did the same in the comic industry and the gaming industry and now they are trying it in the open source community.'

Fortunately, some contributors are seriously considering withdrawing their code, although they need to simply go ahead and do it now. Dire threats and warnings never, ever work with these lunatics. They always - and usually correctly - assume that you're going to back down.

'My company is already considering the full withdrawal of all contributed code to the kernel project and related embedded kernel projects. You literally can’t run embedded Linux on industrial controls or handheld scanners without this code.'

Assuming the Code of Conduct can be removed, an anti-SJW inquisition would be the correct next step, followed by permanent exclusion and ideological policing. Because, as you have been openly warned, the Code of Conduct is an SJW weapon and it is only a prelude of ruthless enforcement and even worse things to come.

The two primary weapons utilized by corporate SJWs to marginalize opponents of convergence are the now-ubiquitous Code of Conduct and the Community Committee. While codes of conduct sound sensible enough in theory, in practice they are very vaguely worded documents that serve much the same purpose for the Community Committees responsible for enforcing them that petty traffic laws do for the police. Namely, they permit the Community Committee, which may be named the Steering Committee or even the Code of Conduct Committee, to charge anyone who is insufficiently enthusiastic about the organization’s new social justice priorities with Code of Conduct violations. Since both looking at another individual and not looking at another individual can be deemed violations of the vast majority of these codes of conduct, you can probably see how they can be weaponized in order to freeze, isolate, and eliminate opponents.

In practice, codes of conduct are also used to smoke out and identify opposition to the SJWs, as the initial skeptics who are the most able to understand the danger posed by a proposed code of conduct will usually tend to serve as the nexus of the resistance against it.
And this:

With the recent Social Justice capture of the Linux kernel, many in the open source world may find this guide from Vox Day to be useful.....

The eight stages of the SJW attack sequence are as follows:

1)Locate or Create a Violation of the Narrative.

2)Point and Shriek.

3)Isolate and Swarm.

4)Reject and Transform.

5)Press for Surrender.

6)Appeal to Amenable Authority.

7)Show Trial.

8)Victory Parade.
The rest of this guide consists of the correct way to respond to an SJW attack once it has been identified, ideally at the earliest stage possible. Please note that the eight stages of response do not correspond directly to the eight stages of the SJW attack sequence.

1. Rely on the Three Rs: RECOGNIZE it is happening. REMAIN calm. REALIZE no one cares.
The first thing to do when attacked by SJWs is to recognize that you are under SJW attack, remain calm, and realize that no one else cares. You need to understand that the attack is happening, accept that is happening, and refrain from the temptation to try to make it not be happening. Do not panic! Don’t go running to others for help or sympathy, don’t try to convince everyone around you how outrageous or unfair the accusation is, and don’t explain to anyone how little you deserve the way you are being treated. They don’t care. They really don’t....

2. Don’t try to reason with them.
The second thing is to recognize that there is no way you are going to be able to reason your way out of the situation. Most people who come under SJW attack have the causality backwards. They think the attack is taking place due to whatever it is that they did or said. That’s not the case. The attack is taking place because of who you are and what you represent to the SJWs: a threat to their Narrative. In most cases, the SJWs attempting to discredit and disemploy you already wanted you out long ago, and they are simply using the nominal reason given as an excuse to get rid of you....

3. Do not apologize.
The third thing to remember when undergoing an SJW-attack is to never apologize for anything you have done. I repeat: do not apologize. Do not say you are sorry if anyone’s feelings were hurt, do not express regret, remorse, or contrition, do not say anything that can be taken as an apology in any way. Just in case I am not being sufficiently clear, do not apologize!

Normal people seek apologies because they want to know that you feel bad about what you have done and that you will at least attempt to avoid doing it again in the future. When SJWs push you for an apology after pointing-and-shrieking at you, what they are seeking is a confession to bolster their indictment. ...

4. Accept your fate.
It is psychologically much easier to survive an SJW attack if you accept early on in the process that you are probably going to lose your job or be purged from your church, your social group, or your professional organization. Remember, if the SJWs were not confident they could take you out, they would not have launched the attack in the first place. They prey upon those they believe, rightly or wrongly, to be vulnerable....

5. Document their every word and action
Most of the time, SJW purges are committed at least partially outside the organization’s established rules and forms. You may not be an expert, but some of the people following along will be. Make sure every step in the process, and every piece of communication you receive from them, is documented, critiqued, and publicized. ...

6. Do not resign!
Do not resign! You must always keep in mind that their real goal is not to formally purge you, but to encourage you to quit on your own. That allows them to publicly wash their hands of the affair and claim that your decision to leave was not their fault. ...

7. Make the rubble bounce.
Whether you survive the attempted purge or whether you don’t, it’s very important to observe who has defined himself as an ally, an enemy, or a neutral party during the process. The choices people make will pleasantly surprise you about as often as they disappoint you. Once everyone’s choices have been made clear, your task is simple. Target the enemy at every opportunity. Hit them wherever they show themselves vulnerable. Play as dirty as your conscience will permit. Undermine them, sabotage them, and discredit them. Be ruthless and show them absolutely no mercy. This is not the time for Christian forgiveness because these are people who have not repented, these are people who are trying to destroy you and are quite willing to harm your family and your children in the process. Take them down and take them out without hesitation....

8. Start nothing, finish everything.
Even when the initial conflict is over, the SJWs are not going to leave you alone so long as they believe you to be a potentially vulnerable threat to them. This is why you have to be prepared to continue to up the ante until they finally reach the conclusion that they cannot possibly beat you and they are better off keeping their distance. Fortunately, SJWs are highly emotional, cowardly, and prone to depression, so demoralizing them tends to be considerably easier than you might imagine....

PlayStation 3 emulator 'RPCS3' is coming along nicely with some major improvements

Quoting: baccilus
Quoting: ElectricPrismIn the same way that it's said that Microsoft and Adobe would prefer people to pirate their products (non business users) instead of going with a competitor, there is future financial benefit created by people who use those products even if obtained illegally.

This comment is from a Scientific Economic, Social Behavioral & Market perspectives, not the legal or moral.
I can attest to that. I live in India and I have never ever met anyone who has bought a Microsoft or Adobe license. Microsoft windows license often come with laptops now but no one actively buys them. The same with Adobe licenses.
I'm VERY American and I haven't paid for a copy of Windows since 1996. Other than a four month free trial of Vista, Iused pirated copies the whole time. It's actually one of the things that has slowed the grow of Linux - Linux costs no money to download and use. Pirated Windows costs no money to download and use, and everything runs natively on it. This is why Microsoft really never brutally cracked down on Windows piracy. As long as you were in their ecosystem you were still counted in their marketshare and the control that translated to was worth way more than a one time payment from random users.

Microsoft is driving the success of Linux. Hell, Adobe is driving the success of GIMP, just like Maya's(and 3D StudioMax) outrageous fees are driving the development of Blender.

Quoting: HadBabitsGood stuff :) You can't stop piracy, but you can preserve history for future generations; and not just the titles the publishers deem 'worthy' of a $60 remaster.
I don't know about preserving history so much as just preserving the ability to play the game at all. If you look at the internet archive, there are all kinds of DOS programs - not just games - that don't run and can't be updated because there is no source code archived to update. The first MDK is a great example. Shiny saved the source for MDK2, so in recent years there was a remaster. The first game would have to be remade from the ground up, so the best that you're ever going to do is DOSBox.

Red Dead Redemption will never be ported to any PC platform because it's a complete mess of duct taped together game engine builds literally cobbled together two different versions of GTA. Porting it over to anything else would first require porting it to a new engine. Well, what happens when the last PS3 quits working? If you love cowboy shooters, you just lost one of the best.

One of the trends that Half Life spawned back in the very late 1990's was to include both good mod tools and then a SDK.Because Warren Spector put Deus Ex out with an SDK there is currently the ability to play the game in DirectX10 because a computer science student coded up the renderer for it just a few years ago, and it works with all the other Unreal engine games from that period that also shipped with an SDK. Yes, it would have been nce if he had just gone OpenGL, but the point is that the game can actually get updated to run on new systems just because of that SDK. Freespace, DOOM3, and a few others have had their engine source codes GPLed, and frankly I think that should be made mandatory under consumer protection law. After ten years you either update the game to current standards or you gpl the source so that the fans can do it for you.

Plus there's also something else at work here. I paid $2000 for a computer, I DON'T WANT TO PAY MORE FOR AN INFERIOR COMPUTER THAT REALLY ONLY SERVES AS A DRM BOX. Bring your game where I live and I will happily buy it from you as my Steam library can attest to. SEGA has their Genesis collection up on Steam. Guess what, nobody pirates Genesis games anymore, which makes me surprised that they haven't put up all the Dreamcast titles, too. Maybe even their arcade games. Meanwhile, I guess Nintendo doesn't like easy money because yes I really would like to pay Zelda:Link to the Past in 4K. Or Starfox64. Or Mario3. Or Contra. And I would love to pay to provide me with that ease of use.

Quoting: KrumpetPirate
Quoting: Mountain ManDo the Batman Arkham games work yet? Those are the only ones I really care about.
Arkham Origins runs at least, but very poorly. I think it crashed out or I got so annoyed with the terrible graphical glitches that I quit the game and moved on to the next test.
Arkham City GOTY apparently has a workaround :

I haven't tried it yet because I want to replay them in order and Arkham Asylum GOTY does not work. Neither does Arkham Knight.

We knew this sort of thing would happen in the short term. We're after more Linux users first, then more native titles once we're an economic force worth catering to.

NVIDIA have released the 410.57 driver as well as a 396.54.06 Vulkan beta driver to help DXVK

396.54.06?

I JUST changed to 396.54.05 literally yesterday.

For those on NVIDIA, the 396.54.05 driver seems to have some noteworthy performance improvements

Just switched over. The only game I have on the system right now is Alan Wake. Just finished DOOM and deleted it. Any other suggestions?

Valve have been fined 147 thousand euros in France
18 Sep 2018 at 6:50 pm UTC Likes: 3

I'm wondering about the timing. Assuming this is really happening, Valve just went public with their integration of Proton+DXVK into Steam Play, and now coming from one of the main countries in the EU responsible for the recent link tax copyright heavy-handedness is beginning an attack against Valve. Now this may be French bureaucrats being French bureaucrats, or Microsoft might have pulled some levers behind the scenes to begin the attack against Valve as Valve has clearly thrown a monkey in the wrench with regards to Microsoft's obvious moves towards locking down Windows similarly to Apple and Google.

There is no doubt in my mind that Microsoft knew that Steam Play integration was coming before Valve announced it, which means they began their response before it was made public. Business is war, and while Valve has their sights set at being the hub for video games on the net, Microsoft has dreams of a closed ecosystem where they get a payout every time anybody does anything with a computer. The two goals are not compatible, and Microsoft has deeper pockets and multiple decades worth of political connections.

Already wishlisted and I can't do anymore than that until I get a new job. So if anyone is hiring an almost-RHCSA in Oregon who also can't code yet, please let me know. :)

Valve have now pushed out all the recent beta changes in Steam Play's Proton to everyone

Quoting: GuestI just want to know if the Wine fruit is hanging low enough now that any game developers who previously haven't supported us are starting to plan on officially supporting Linux via that path, such as Bethesda and id software. Bring on that tux/SteamOS icon so we can throw them our bux!
I don't agree with this. I am Valve's biggest cheerleader in this project, but I am absolutely against the idea of giving Proton the Linux/SteamOS icon. Perhaps a brand new Proton icon is in order, but the SteamOS icon should be reserved strictly for native ports only. The two should remain separate if only to make everybody stop and realize just how much work is going into this. I like the warning signs telling the user that this is running on SteamPlay. First the public pressure will be on the publishers to put in the token effort to help Valve get their game working. Then the pressure will be on native ports with only the worst devs relying on Proton which should be pretty close to a native experience by that point. But the two need to remain separate for that to happen.

As for the current state of Proton, there are a bunch of games that still require special launch options and I believe we need to find some efficient way to document that and keep that documentation current. But more to the point we need to keep track of the growing list of titles that just work, because seamless integration is the point here. The point of this is not to have to hassle with wine prefixes and such. I have no doubt Valve will keep this going until we get there, but until then we need to do our part.
