Why Linux games often perform worse than on Windows
27 Oct 2016 at 12:02 pm UTC Likes: 6

I know these kind of games are rare, but if you look at games that are developed for Linux and do a windows release later you see that the linux version is much faster than the windows version. I can clearly state this for the game I am involved in ( MegagGlest ). For MegaGlest Linux is first priority. As far as I know Nexuiz runs faster on Linux too.

btw, MegaGlest is on steam greenlight now, please vote for us:

The Linux version of Arma 3 is set to continue on, and Arma 3 plans to go 64bit

Hm, still marked as "experimental". I must admit I still hesitate to buy it if you never know if linux support is dropped the next day. Is it not possible to say somehting like "we will support linux ( in experimental state ) for the next year for sure" ?

Wow!
Thank you Feral! 3 very good linux game releases in a row!
Only sad thing is, when do I have time to play all this? :-/

Sadly it looks like Shadow Warrior 2 won't be a day-1 Linux release

Noooooo uhuhuuu..... I want this so much!

But why is it always a problem to release on linux too, even if they use an actual UnrealEngine? Is the UnrealEngine in the end not as cross plattform compatible as they try to make people think it would be?
All those shiny new games using unreal engine end up with "maybe later", "not on release" or haveing "horrible broken graphics" and os on.
Or is the real reason, that most developers have absolutly no clue what linux is ? Sometimes I get the feeling that even installing/using a modern Linux distribution is a serious problem for them. If I see bugs on steam like "missing execution flags" and simple things like these, I am really shocked. ( I mean these kind of things that typically happen if people try to manage linux binaries in windows. )

Or is windows only DRM the main showstopper for AA or AAA games and cause the delay for us ?

Volition say it's too early to tell if Agents of Mayhem will come to Linux

The better question on this early state is if the developers have cross plattform development in mind !

I have finally found a way to sort out screen tearing on Nvidia with Linux

Is this tearing problem maybe a KDE only problem? I never noticed anything unusual using mate so far.

RUNNING WITH RIFLES updated with mod support and a big sale, already has a zombie mod

@JackMayol: A typical very simple reason is, linux is case sensitive in filesystems. You can either fix this in every single mod manually, or you force CaseSensitivity from the software itself so that the windows users will have the same problems. By this Modders typically fix those issues very fast.

ARK spin-off ARK: Survival Of The Fittest will come to Linux

Will they still use this horrible low quality UT-Engine for this? I never understood why they crippled the linux version so much. Why not simply use a up to date UT-Engine compiled for linux with OpenGL4 support and so on ?

Beside of these annoying linux Gfx issue this game has really good gameplay and especially my sons had a lot of fun with this game. So really big thanks for the linux version, but .... please dear developers if you read this, please make the linux version faster and especially better looking and fix those long standing GFX bugs.

All in all this is running quite well here on the following rigs but there are situations with bad frame drops especially on the 3rd setup:

1.
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (3400MHz)
8GB Ram
GeForce GTX 960

2.
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (3400MHz)
8GB Ram
GeForce GTX 750ti

3. AMD Phenom 2 X3 ( unknown)
8GB Ram
GeForce GTX 750ti
