XCOM: Enemy Unknown Released For Linux
19 Jun 2014 at 12:40 pm UTC

Kind of sad; this marks the last game I had been tracking on Steamdb, waiting for activity. But whatever, time to spend that time on some XCOM. I know have it on Android, Xbox, and Linux :P

The (hopefully) Weekly State Of SteamOS Address

Nothing personal, but your username makes me want to end you ^_^

OT: I'm hoping other distros learn from valve in regards to optimizing a system for games, as well as for work. I may end up using it on my old laptop that's missing it's monitor, it might make a very nice stream box for my living room once Valve enables streaming from Linux :)

Quoting: KelsIf anything, I find the performance is actually better under Linux than it was under Windows 7. I'm pretty impressed with how it came out, other than a minor difficulty in setting my resolution (which mysteriously fixed itself somehow).
Keep in mind that the devs mentioned the OS X and Linux port can't max out graphics as they do in Windows.

I've been looking forward to this game, though I'll probably wait for the full release :)

Alienware's Steam Machine Fully Announced, They Aren't Using SteamOS

As I've long said, I don't care much about the Steam machine. Valve has built quite a bit of momentum without it, and now developers and groups like Humble and GOG are keeping the ball rolling. Aside from Linux enthusiasts (and come on, most of us are sticking with our rigs), most gamers seemed pretty sceptical of the idea from the start. However, if this venture lead them to bring a lot of games to Linux and in-home streaming, I can live with it ;)

I wouldn't mind a key ;) I've been on the fence about this game, but it looks like a good time.

I've been having a lot of fun with this; I hope the developer brings it to mobile, I'd certainly buy it :)

Valve Are Funding A Big Change To Mesa, Should Improve Linux Graphical Performance

Great to hear :) Grievances aside, there's no denying Valve's got quite a bit accomplished.

(Liam: I think there's a typo in your second to last sentence ;))

GOL On Advert Blocking, I Don't Hate You, But Please Don't Do It
3 Jun 2014 at 12:52 pm UTC

I've taken to unblocking sites I want to support that don't have obnoxious ads, so you've been unblocked for some time :) Bless Jim, but the Escapist's site is horrible for video ads, so I opted instead to subscribe for ad free viewing (and HTML5 videos, though I don't like that paywall).

As for other methods, I think some interesting options will appear as the community grows (I wish I contribute more to that, but my job has me exhausted this introvert it is). For instance, we could do a tournament where all competitors chip in; then split it into prize money (or just prizes) and the rest for the site. Though, you'd probably need more resources like dedicated servers, but it'd be fun to do sometime in the future :)
