Proton GE has a fresh new build out with lots of updates and special fixes

Quoting: vipor29not sure how he got black ops II to work,it still does not work for me.i have the proton 5.0-ge version installed right.
Quoting: randomgamerguy1997I was wondering about that as well since I want to play it through Plutonium which as way more players than regular BO2
Looks like the specific Black Ops 2 patch is this one [External Link] (adds a few lines in ptrace.c) from this wine bug report [External Link] (also discussed at this proton issue [External Link].

That patch works beautifully in wine and wine-staging. Unfortunately, Black Ops 2 has never gotten that far with any version of proton. It quits before even getting to that point with a
pid 6966 != 6965, skipping destruction (fork without exec?)

Without that patch in wine, the game throws an error message on kernels version 4.18 and newer. I can confirm wine and wine-staging work with 4.14, 4.19, and 5.5 with the patch (likely all kernel versions).

Tip for running steam in wine: switch to View -> Small Mode for a non-glitchy interface.

Regardless, I'm glad it's been added in Proton GE, as it will make testing compatibility with newer versions of proton that much easier, and it doesn't appear to have any negative side-effects.

Psyonix are ending support for Rocket League on both Linux and macOS (updated)

Quoting: razing32Are you guys getting your DLC refunded as well ? Or just base game ?
Just curios.
In their 2nd statement [External Link], Psyonix states:
If you play Rocket League on macOS or Linux and want a refund for the base game, please follow these steps
Notice "base game". The post says nothing about DLC or other purchases. It does not look like they are refunding DLC.

EDIT: Users have reported success as long as they mention the DLC in the request

"Wine is not harmful to Linux gaming"

Have we learned our lesson yet?
The issue is not the existence of a translation layer. The issue is lack of market share. They specifically said that Mac and Linux users comprised "0.3%" of their total player base (that's likely all platforms, not just PC) - not enough to merit the costs behind supporting those platforms.

The developers of Wine/Proton/Dxvk and other translation layers are actively giving people more reason to switch to Linux from windows. You're blaming the very technologies that provide a bridge for more people to start using Linux.

The knowledge of Epic's business practices over the past couple years, and the suspicion that they purchased RL simply to force more people to use their own store did not provide adequate shock defense for this announcement.

That is the main game I play with family and friends by quite a bit. Between being quick to get into a party, the fast-paced action, the frequent breaks, controller support for quick hand-offs...makes it perfect for playing with a volatile group. It's such a unique game too...

Between the over 700 hours of gameplay over the past 4 years I've had with that game...grinding to achieve diamond in certain ranked games...and the money I've spent on copies and DLC for friends and family who have transitioned to Linux...

As others have stated, Proton works wonderfully. However, I'd be much less opposed to this if they had vowed support for Proton. As it is, it could stop working at any time.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do. "Just find another game" isn't easy, especially when you've invested so much into one already.

You can now easily control the AMD Wraith Prism RGB colouring on Linux with CM-RGB

Quoting: Lcs006This is what I hate - One can not just install application and use it. One needs some Java, some pip (whatever this is). Fuck it, I have other priorities.
There is no official support. Individuals have taken it upon themselves to try to fill the gaps that the manufacturers of the product have left for Linux users. The least you can do is be grateful for their efforts. If you don't like something, maybe you can contribute instead of complaining. Or maybe you should complain to the manufacturers who neglected to provide support to begin with.

Also...this application is for RGB lighting...which has kinda become synonymous with frivolous features. No one is expecting you to prioritize this over anything else.

DXVK 1.5 released with D9VK merged in for D3D9 support, plus a statement on DXVK's future
16 Dec 2019 at 10:34 pm UTC

Quoting: ziabiceHow hard is to create some automatic tests for DX11 + DXVK? Without some good tests is nearly impossible to refactor things
It has tests [External Link] to catch regressions. That's not the deterring factor. DXVK is at a point where it's very stable and works for most things. Any changes introduce risk breaking it for something. Even if all known tests pass after a change, there's always a chance you run into random quirks or race conditions or any number of different issues that only manifest once the changes have been tested by a wider audience.

DXVK already has a ton of workarounds implemented for specific devices, drivers, and games. These were usually for instances where game/device/driver devs made incorrect assumptions or only targeted specific combinations/vendors, or where a game uses features available in some devices/drivers but not others (not to mention potentially problematic workarounds built into games to get around still other issues/quirks). Large changes would likely reveal even more quirks that need workarounds - that's a lot more work for little to no gain.

BUT, if you feel it still needs something, you're welcome to contribute your solutions!

Do you hear an odd buzzing sound? Minecraft 1.15 is out with a new friend
11 Dec 2019 at 1:53 am UTC

The new content makes it interesting, but I'm really missing Custom Worlds (removed in 1.13). The biggest tweak I'd want to set is the sea level so I can make a world that's entirely deep ocean, but have islands from various biomes scattered throughout (imagine the ocean from Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, but in minecraft). Noise levels were also fun to tweak, since you could make some pretty wacky worlds with islands floating in the sky.

It's a shame they removed it when they did...oceans became so much more interesting.

They initially said something like that would be returning after 1.13. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it's been re-added yet, even in 1.15.

NVIDIA presenting a talk at GTC 2020 about Linux drivers and possibly some open source news
6 Dec 2019 at 8:24 pm UTC Likes: 3

Quoting: x_wingTo be honest, I don't get very exited as the primary topic for the sessions is listed as 'Supercomputing'. Lets see what the announce but I don't have big expectations.
Primary topic might not be very important. Any plans on the part of Nvidia for "supporting Nouveau" will likely make it better all-around, and hopefully help with overall development. Very much looking forward to their announcements in this regard.

IMHO, any steps in the right direction are better than no steps or steps in the wrong direction.

Did Valve run out then find some more? Or maybe it's region specific...

Despite reports on here that there were no more controllers, I was able to get one for $5 ($15 after shipping) just now. The page for it still says "Limited stock available"

Quoting: XpanderThank you for forcing a incomplete UI into our face
I respectfully disagree - the new UI functions quite well and the client got more stable since it was first introduced into beta, and certainly since it was first leaked.

While the client can always be better, I think it's about time they made this the official stable version. I wouldn't want minor issues to delay the wider adoption of the new UI (though I do hope they get the proton version easily visible [External Link] soon).

I'm sure consolidating this change makes it easier for the dev team as well - less surface area to support (old interface and new interface)

Quoting: XpanderWhy is everything huge like its made for blind people or fits more as a big picture replacement for TV..
I think the larger elements better utilize standard screen sizes of today. The element sizes go quite well with a 1080p screen, and seem fine on a 1280x720 screen... The main list is still compact, and IMHO that's how it should be.

Have you tried this setting?
