€80 eh? triplehey games finally reached the price of early 90s games (adjusting for inflation). but at least back then they used to give you a boxed version with lot of stuff like manuals, maps, and various trinkets.

Quoting: denyasisProvided you have a newer card to begin with. Per the article it's only for 20xx and 30xx series cards.
Yes of course but it gotta start somewhere. Not too long from now those generations are seen as old and outdated.
That would be fair(-ish) if the current market wasn't completely f*.

Even "old" geforce 10xx series cards are still quite expensive in the used market.

I applaud AMD's effort to provide an open-source, accessible, vendor-agnotic, easy to implemenet tech, usable even by older graphics cards.

Microtransactions.
Lootboxes, cosmetics, more content.
If they are not in the game now, they'll be in the future.

It's always about the money.

The history of PC gaming.
These games should be taught in school along with the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Not quite. The vast majority of the advances we've seen have been due to Proton and Valve has been funding large parts of it. Even drivers get fixed up faster nowadays to keep support up.
From a technological standpoint, desktop Linux risks to become dependent on what Valve thinks is important for Proton.
Quoting Lee:
These are tough problems that need people looking at them, and native cares about this stuff! Instead the money’s just getting dumped into crap like the Synchronization Primitive of the Month that basically nobody making production-quality software can ship.
Egoistically one can say as long as we can play all the Windows games who cares.
But again, I think Valve's bet to terminate all native development is risky.

Who knows what happens in the future, but the status quo always changes. Blockbuster died due to online streaming. Should we have kept Blockbuster artificially alive - just for the sake of it?

Ethan Lee explained the situation better.

But of course it's hard to predict the future.

Proton is both the saviour and bane of Linux gaming.

Short term I see a widening catalog of playable games.

Kalypso Media to reduce pricing on their games as a result of doing well

In a market pushing for 70$/€ per game this is so unusual and uncapitalistic (they can do this only because they're privately owned).

Kudos to them!

Quoting: gardotd426It took months and months for RDNA 1 to get overclocking/voltage control
Who cares about overclocking, it took them 6+ months to have a "stable" open driver for RDNA 1. The desktop would randomly lock up on you unless you enabled a bunch of driver debug workarounds to disable various features.
It was infuriating, sad, and pathetic.
