Valve puts up Proton 5.13-4 to get Cyberpunk 2077 working on Linux for AMD GPUs

And you do realize that Valve upstreams all their work to Wine proper, so Linux gamers benefit regardless of if they're using Steam or not (in fact I myself am not, I use good ole system-wide installed Wine)?
And you do realize that most often, due to various reasons that are not of relevance here, Windows games running on Wine are much more hassle-free than Linux native games, due not to some kind of special incompetence on the part of the people making them but due to the lackluster graphics/audio/input/etc Linux stack?
And you do realize that Nvidia not being as good as AMD on Linux is due to Nvidia's stubbornness and/or indifference towards Linux, and not due to some inherent flaw of Proton?
And finally, you do realize that being on a platform of less than 1%, you are in no way entitled to demand anything?
Gee, when did the Linux community become so full of itself?

Quoting: GuestWow, Linux gaming has really made giant strides lately! Some years ago we were just happy when a native AAA title like XCom 2 or Civ V got a native port. Nowadays native ports are out of the question and we are happy if a game *may* run ok in Linux using a compatibility layer tied to a specific store and only if you have a specific vendor gpu. Amazing progress!Tied to a specific store? You do realize that Wine as a project predates Valve and Steam on Linux by a good few years, right?

Linux native support is never going to be what you want it to be as long as Linux gaming's market share sits under 1%. And that market share is going to remain under 1% as long as the companies behind AAA games don't make their games for Linux. And the companies behind AAA games will never start making their games for Linux unless they see a possible profit from it. And they won't see a possible profit from it unless Linux gaming's market share rises way above 1%. And the only way for Linux gaming's market share to rise above 1% is for Linux to have access to the vast catalog of games that were developed for Windows in the past; are being developed for Windows in the present; and will keep being developed for Windows in the foreseeable future; so that current Windows gamers can switch to Linux without losing their games.
See where I'm going with this? I sure hope you do.
So all you people advocating "the Linux way or the highway", if you prefer playing only Farmville, Super Tux Cart and the like just because they happen to run on Linux, or even worse prefer paying Google (talk about Linux-friendly, lol) to play your AAA games on Stadia, instead of getting your hands a little dirty to make your AAA games run on your Linux box in DIY fashion (which, as an aside, is really the Linux way, something you would know if you were old enough), then by all means do so. No hard feelings there. But please, do get out of your goddamn silo and face the reality that is, well, reality.
Sorry if I'm coming off sounding harsh, but I too am too old to be pussyfooting with my thoughts here.

Quoting: Storminator16My last 2 cents because I'm finding reading a lot of these posts to be...I don't know...a trip down fantasy island: Proton & Linux support is never going to be what you want it to be. Your games may work, they may not. Not one of these corporations is going to spend the time future-proofing any of this, only contributors. Valve will have their limits, and their "limits" will involve monetary value. Back to where we already were, eh? I know the goal is to get Proton/Wine to "just work" but we aren't close to being there yet. So, the suggestion to "buy the game to show support" is a comment born out of sheer insecurity or a quest for validation from Windows gamers. Get out of the silo every once in a while and get a better perspective because it's silly. I'm going to come off sounding harsh, I'm too old to be pussyfooting with my thoughts here. That's cute, I was thinking something along those very same lines, but in reverse: I'm finding comments like this one a trip down the fantasy island, and I'm having a really difficult time accepting that they're written by people older than their teens.
Some of you are investing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much into this conversation. Not a popular opinion but like I said, my last 2 cents.
I'm playing it on Stadia or Xbox Series X. I have other battles to fight, this one freaking game surely isn't one. Keyword was "game".

Out of curiosity, can someone tell me what games that currently run natively on Stadia (i.e. no dxvk wrappers and the like, if that's a thing) are also available natively on Linux?
P.S. The game runs absolutely fine on an Nvidia 1660, without any audio glitches or what else, at a comfortable ~40fps on medium settings plus a few of them set a bit higher. Can't comment on bugs and/or the game hanging after 1-2 hours because I haven't spent more than an hour at a time in game, and that time has been mostly spent in the character creation editor and in the introductory areas for each of the three lifepaths (still trying to decide what to play as :P).

Would be nice if developers started being clearer though and just say Windows.Well, that's on the marketers, not on the developers. Though unfortunately there are indeed too many developers out there that have absolutely no idea what "a Linux" is if you ask them. Oh, how I hate* these guys... It's like being a professional car mechanic and not being aware that there are other mechanical things that operate on the same principles but made with different parts and for different purposes; you know, things like motorcycles, airplanes or spaceships. How can I trust your professed ability if you're clueless about the basic stuff?

It's all a matter of ideology (like the Purple dude correctly tried to tell you but you obviously failed to listen) and yours is blinding you to these simple facts.

Quoting: GuestI thought that it is sensible to think that GamingOnLinux.com would focus on gamingNow see, there's the root of all your problems. This site is not about GamingOnLinux, it's about GamingOnLinux. Linux is the main focus. And people who've deliberately chosen to game on an open platform like Linux, as opposed to closed platforms like Windows and MacOS, obviously consider openness a priority when choosing what hardware to buy. Otherwise why the fsck would we bother with Linux in the first place? If we only wanted pure performance like you claim, then we'd be gaming on Windows and arguing semantics on TenForums, yeah?

Quoting: Guestlinux gaming is pretty much on life support. Proton keeps it alive but for how long? Valve created linux gaming because they saw it as a not-windows-but-kinda-works alternative
Quoting: GuestNot that wayland is going to make the linux desktop competitive with macos or windows when it barely competes with xorg...Wtf? Birdie, is that you?

Other than that though, and minus some additional minor niggles here and there, KDE is indeed a great DE.

Quoting: LungDragoIn my mind, the only reason you wouldn't use KDE is ifc) You need proper CJK support and IME integration and can't be bothered with jumping through a couple hundred of hoops just to end up with a half baked, barely working solution.
a) you're a newbie user and/or can't be bothered to tinker with your desktop to suit your needs and tastes
b) you're a fancy enlightened i3 user - although it's worth noting that again surprisingly KDE is very useable keyboard only if you wish.

Quoting: AvikarrThe game don't start for me :/ Very strange, because Total War: Warhammer II works just fine. I'm using Manjaro. It just shows steam "window" saying about starting the game, and then turns off and nothing happens. When I tried running the game with Proton, it does the same thing. Any idea why it doesn't start?Maybe you're using steam-native and your system is missing some library? It's happened to me before with a Feral port and it turned out I was missing gconf. You can also try running Steam via the terminal and after you try to run the game, you can read the printed error messages and find out what the issue is.
The 'GameMode' performance tool from Feral Interactive makes it into Ubuntu 20.04

So, on the one hand they try to have Ubuntu's 32bit support gutted, indicating a lack of understanding regarding the requirements for properly gaming on Linux, and on the other hand they implement Feral's GameMode as part of the default setup, indicating a desire to make Ubuntu into a valid gaming distribution. Have they learned from their past mistakes and done a turnabout? Or am I missing something here?

Well, now I can't help but feel absolutely certain that Nvidia's "big open source announcement" scheduled for March 23-26 (more info [External Link]) will be to reveal their top secret business partnership with Valve, aiming to produce the next generation of Steam Cuda™ Machines, running on an open core Wayland stack, as a masterfully orchestrated counterattack to AMD's partnerships with Sony and MS as regards to providing the GPUs for PS5 and XboxNext.
I'm calling it first folks: the Year of the Linux Desktop (2020 Edition) is finally upon us, and it's all thanks to Nvidia. Rejoice.
