Yes.

Proton Experimental gets more CEG DRM fixes, new fsync code

Quoting: SirBubblesWell, I'm hoping that one day, Space Marine might just work. I loved smashing Ork face, but cracking it and running it the old-fashioned way seemed a hassle.
Yesterday I tested Warhammer 40000: Space Marine and it just worked (after switching to "steam beta", enabling "proton experimental" and switching to the "bleeding edge" version of proton experimental... and checking game files and resetting the proton prefix a couple of times  ). Maybe now it is not a "just works" situation but the anti-cheat problem looks solved. I even played in a multiplayer coop match, there are still people playing it!.

Metro Exodus from 4A and Deep Silver has officially released for Linux
7 May 2021 at 6:58 pm UTC

From the release anouncement [External Link]:
Please note – the Metro Exodus PC Enhanced Edition requires Ray Tracing capable hardware as the minimum spec – please check the PC Specs chart for more information.
With my GPU I am out but I am still interested to know if there is any news about a possible official support for linux.

What we expect to come from Valve to help Linux gaming in 2021
17 Jan 2021 at 12:16 pm UTC

Quoting: ageresIn order to understand what Valve could intend, people should realize it's a commercial company that exists to make money, not to drive people to go FOSS. I don't believe that Valve advances Linux gaming just because good Gaben loves Linux and us, Linux users. Before suggesting an idea, try to think what benefit can Valve get and how. It should lead to a situation where more people spend more money on Steam.
I agree with ageres and the other that expressed similar concepts before.
Supporting Linux is not the purpose of Valve, it is the mean that allows them not to be cut of from the market by the "walled garden" aspirations of Microsoft. Another goal for Valve may be to be able to keep selling classic old games that have problems running on the last Windows OS versions. I read some old games already run better under Proton than under Windows 10.

This USB bootable Steam drive looks like more a developer tool than a final user tool. I find it difficult to imagine a typical PC user go buy a (high performance) external drive and change the boot configuration of the PC to... what advantage? Run a game they already own with (usually) lower performance?

I think instead of an independent developer that is is evaluating the option to publish a game also on Linux but it knows nothing of this OS. If there was a cheap tool to be connected to their development PC that allowed them to test the game on Linux? Maybe with debug tools already loaded and configured to work with Proton and all the software and services that Valve offers. Maybe even with development environment already installed and configured with plugins, I think for example about Unity and all the games without a Linux version even if in theory it may be supported. No need to change their development environment after all the hours spend in configuring and adapting all the tools to their workflow. This will be an interesting new feature. It may even be useful to big companies for some initial evaluation to support Proton.

7 Days to Die has a massive overhaul with Alpha 19 out now

Quoting: KithopIf I remember right, the key on my end was using MangoHud's own VSync override plus the in-game VSync config toggle. Some combination of the two being on together or one off and one on tended to either trigger the super delayed input bug or resolve it. I've been getting DiscordOverlayLinux working as well, and that requires the KDE Plasma compositor to be on, which works fine in OpenGL, but I haven't tried that with the Vulkan renderer yet.

I used GOverlay to set both OpenGL and Vulkan VSync to 'Adaptive' system-wide, enable MangoHud system-wide, and I *think* in 7 Days to Die I have the in-game options set to also have VSync on and that works. Turning any of the VSync settings off is what triggers the input lag for me, but I suspect it's probably because 'off' is only really 'off' in one layer of the entire stack, and the extra frames are..backing up/being buffered somewhere..? Maybe? If you manage to turn all VSync settings and the compositor fully off I suspect it might work.

Could also play around with the nvidia-settings app to see if there's any other VSync / Flip-to-Vblank settings there you can tweak, but 'all on' or 'all off' seems to be where I had the most luck.
Just tested enabling vsync but it spreads the input delay even for the main menu, it is almost unusable. Thanks for the ideas.
Anyway, it is strange that you need to enable vsync to remove the input delay. For what I have read, usually it is vsync that causes delay on the input  .
For now I lowered the graphics quality to medium in the OpenGL version and the frame rate became reliably high. I think I need to find the right spot between medium and high to get a nice and playable game.

I am on the second game and the biggest problem I have now is how to avoid dying of infection. The antibiotics are difficult to find and I keep getting infected in stupid ways (dogs apart, how I hate dogs! )

7 Days to Die has a massive overhaul with Alpha 19 out now

Quoting: KithopAlso, in case anyone's curious about testing Vulkan or just running MangoHud with it, here's my doozy of a Launch Options set in Steam:
Spoiler, click me

export MANGOHUD=1;export VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/nvidia_icd.json; qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor suspend;mangohud %command%;qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor resume

This turns on my install of MangoHud [External Link] for performance tracking, specifies my nVidia card as the primary/only Vulkan driver to load (otherwise my Intel iGPU takes first priority and it fails), and temporarily disables KDE Plasma's compositor while the game is running to avoid an issue with VSYNC and really really delayed inputs.

The 'export MANGOHUD=1' covers Vulkan while 'mangohud %command%' covers OpenGL, as I understand it - you can actually still use these options in the default OpenGL renderer without issue.

I've used GOverlay [External Link] to force Adaptive VSYNC for both OpenGL and Vulkan modes, and left VSYNC on in-game. With KDE Plasma's compositor running, it seems to do the whole 30 <-> 60 fps jump with changes in effort, while with it temporarily disabled, it can run at other framerates in between without noticeable tearing.
I tested the Vulkan renderer but I am affected by the huge delayed input. I tried to run with various configurations (vsync off, compositor off, lowered the graphics settings) but I have not yet found a solution.
The frame rate of the OpenGL renderer is rather low and I hope that the Vulkan will have better performance. Ideas for solving this problem are welcome  .

Love Ubuntu but want the latest KDE Plasma? KDE neon now sits atop Ubuntu 20.04

Quoting: GryxxNow i have to ask difficult question:
I'm looking for distro that:
1. Is fully compatible with Ubuntu in terms of gaming (mainly Robocraft, i do not want to use flatpak)
2. Has fresh packages (KDE, kernel, Mesa, Wine, Lutris being major ones)
3. Does integrate well with KDE
4. I would like something as close as possible to rolling relase
I doubt there is any distro that can satisfy such requirements, if the distro uses the Ubuntu repository then it cannot be rolling release.
If the compatibility with Ubuntu is required only for running Robocraft, I think the best solution is to ask someone using a rolling release (probably Arch or derivatives) if the game works on their system.

Love Ubuntu but want the latest KDE Plasma? KDE neon now sits atop Ubuntu 20.04

Hi from an happy KDE-Neon user.
I like this "distro" because allows to have a stable system thanks to the Ubuntu LTS base but with the last features of KDE environment. The new plasma/KDE releases are usually published in a matter of days. In the rare cases where a release contains some bugged code, the problem is not system-breaking and will be fixed in few days (or hours? :woot: ).

The negative aspect of using KDE-neon is the need to wait a few month before upgrading to the next LTS release. I think this is widely compensated by having the last features of the desktop environment, the part of the system more in contact with the user. I have a Nvidia GPU so I do not need a bleeding edge Mesa or kernel, I do not know how simple will be to install and maintain a system for gaming with an AMD GPU.

About stability: with this upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 I had a problem with the audio output not detected anymore (my motherboard is a Gigabyte Aorus Pro X570). After some research and tests I discovered that the "headphones" and "line out" are now swapped. Connecting the headphone jack to the "line out" socket fixed the problem :dizzy: . I doubt this is related to KDE-Neon, it is more probably related to changes in the kernel drivers or PulseAudio. To fix the problem I tried even to install the HWE Kernel but I thinks that for now for Ubuntu 20.04 the HWE kernel is the same as the standard kernel?. After reading lordgault I installed Xanmod kernel, the audio outputs are still swapped but at least now I have a kernel with support for fsync  .

Half-Life: Absolute Zero mimics Half-Life's original vibe, run on Linux with Xash3D FWGS

Quoting: NezchanI'm not really sure what different "look and feel" we're talking about here, and the trailer doesn't tell me either. It seems...slightly more action oriented? Or a little more disturbing during scripted events? Or maybe that's just how the trailer is cut, I can't really tell.
I'm wondering the exact same thing. The trailer was conveying a different tone than the Half-Life I remember, though that's due to the kind of music they put into it. Their page on Steam doesn't tell much either.
It is comforting to see that I am not the only one with this question. Wherever I read about this project it is described in the same way but I have never found an explanation of what this different "look and feel".

What have you been playing recently and what are your thoughts?
