Canonical have released a statement on Ubuntu and 32bit support, will keep select packages

I think we can learn a few lessons from this.

1. Oh, the irony: we could see how important Ubuntu is and how much Linux has progressed on desktops in the recent years. Greek schools, Madrid Linux etc.

2. Canonical is struggling and apparently needs some help either in people getting involved or in donations.

I really wonder how much effort is really needed for support, development and maintenance of Ubuntu to be what it is today. Not to mention Debian and all the other developers involved. It seems to me Linux is in a way an alchemical miracle.

Canonical are now saying Ubuntu's 32bit is not being entirely dropped, 32bit libraries will be "frozen"

The issue seems to be much deeper then i386 support. It seems Linux indeed does not have a viable desktop solution. I am not trolling here. If Valve was indeed looking for an alternative and did not find one we have a problem wether we like it or not.

Also there seems to be a lot of complaining about Ubuntu and the focus of Canonical. I wonder how many users donated even a single cent for Ubuntu's development? All I see is complaining and very little constructive criticism as well. Such attitudes hurt OSS. It should be obvious by now that if Valve gives up, Ubuntu drops desktop development we are back to square one.

Info on Google Stadia from today’s Stadia Connect, Baldur’s Gate III announced too

A little bit late to the party so sorry for the late question. Is there a soul among us that can explain the technology behind this to me? I mean I am too old to understand some things especially when I think about lag and response of some games in the past. I still remember Duke Nukem 3D played over a modem with a friend and what happened if the modems had to reconnect or the line was too noisy. Or the pings we got with first lan an internet connections. I mean, so many things had to work just right for it to be playable.

Does Stadia "beam" picture to you computer and computer sends the input to the server? Is that all? It does not matter what OS is being used on the device at home? It can be a 386sx as far as google is concerned? I will be most grateful if somebody explains this.

The EU is going after Valve and others for "geo-blocking", a statement from Valve

There is much misunderstanding of what EU is in the comments. I don't know enough about the cases mentioned by Valve but this "single market" thing has two sides. If you wanted to buy, let's say, a mobile phone from a web store in Germany not so long ago (where prices tend to be lower) you were prevented to do so (if you were from somewhere else). This is, if I am informed correctly, illegal now (there are ways to still do it but let's not get into it).

The negative side is not allowing regional pricing. It will never happen that the price of a game will be tailored for E European standard of living but rather of German one where they sell the most and have the highest profit. And so the prices go up. And so does piracy.

The message is: just leave E Europe alone if you don't care about selling for a reasonable price but don't complain about piracy, ok? Ok!

The action adventure game 'Evoland Legendary Edition' arrives with Linux support

Quoting: tuubi
Quoting: OdisejI am really enjoying this game but I cannot find a solution to making this full screen. Did anyone find a solution to this, F11 does not work for me.
Try Alt+F11. That does the trick for me.
Thanks for help. Did not work for me. At first. The problem was that I did not have a shortcut defined. After defining "alt+f11" as fullscreen mode in Gnome shortcuts it worked. I am currently using Manjaro if this is at all relevant.

The war of the PC stores is getting ugly, as Metro Exodus becomes a timed Epic Store exclusive

This reminds me of "meaningful" discussions in the eighties about which is better - Coke or Pepsi. But with that said I don't think this issue with Epic is trivial.

Why I think Steam is more than a Coke. Firstly it was the only online store that was able to block Windows Store dominance. And not just by saying no but by showing you can use another OS to run great games. Enter linux. Now, because Microsoft backed off and because it "allows" users to use its OS without buying it (thanks to OSS and Valve) the linux revolution did not materialize. But the threat to Microsoft/Windows remains thanks to, you are right, Steam.

Second, if Steam (Valve) looses its position the funding will eventually dry up and there won't be much left for linux development. You can argue about DRM, GOG or whatever as much as you like but no other company has done as much for linux gaming as Valve did.

Valve, of course, did not do so out of altruism, true, but linux users profited immensely. The business practice from Epic can therefore do a lot of damage to linux gaming.

Personally I went and bought a nice game from Steam and it runs on linux perfectly. The whole family will have a lot of fun with it. As far as Deep Silver .... I sent them a goodbye letter. I don't think this move was worth it.
