Quoting: BlackBloodRumMy point was that people (such as yourself) often believed that enterprise level distros were pointless even for servers (…)That's really insulting and bordering on defamation. Please don't put words in my mouth that I'd never say.
Quoting: CyborgZetaBut wouldn't running games, and programs/applications in general, inside containers fix this kind of issue? Isn't that one of the goals of Flatpak? You wouldn't be able to use things like the nvidia graphics driver anymore unless you'd include a matching version as well. And then you'd have to fix the kernel.

Yes, obviously. But my point was that the supposedly stable things have large caveats as well and it is really not related to the current issue at all to constantly state that rolling release distribution break everything constantly. This is not an issue of rolling vs frozen distribution.
I don't think things like this breakage can be tested automatically since you'd have to create so many obscure test cases that the effort would make it infeasible.

Backporting security fixes can lead to a lot of trouble if something is missed. Remember the Debian OpenSSL bug a few years ago?

The upper bound is the number of unique files in /usr/lib, although that should overshoot the real number by a huge amount.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIn any case, would that tell me much about the total system usage?Only if you do that for everything that you use (ignoring duplicates). It's very hard to estimate as it hugely varies between programs and obviously the number of programs that you use simultaneously.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyUm, how many of these other thingies are we typically talking about existing at a time?Run ldd on a binary and count the number of libraries that are referenced.

I don't understand why people think that it is a good idea to break existing binary only applications and at the same time expecting that games get native releases. Those two thing are completely incompatible. If you want the Linux desktop to be able to gain a larger market share and get any official releases from commercial developers, such breakages are not an option. It's the same discussion as dropping multilib support since it “only takes space”.
Note: I do not care about EAC breakage (except on principle) since I refuse to play games that use it, but I'm sure that Shovel Knight is not the only native release that is affected by this change.
Apple gets mostly away with complete breakage every few releases since they have a considerable cult following that is happy to pay for anything they do even if they moan in the GOG and Steam forums later when things don't work anymore. And there is an ever increasing number of (indie) developers that has stopped supporting macOS since it is a constant hassle.
TL;DR: IMO doing such changes just to “make things more elegant” will destroy the Linux Desktop irreparably. And there will only be a decreasing number of users left that only use open source software and wine/proton stuff.

Quoting: Liam DaweNope, telemetry and DRM are different. One is tracking, one is restricting. We can quote each other and write nope an arbitrary number of times. Both tracking and restricting are DRM.

I'm not sure I have a copy of the game in the pre Paradox state.

Quoting: Liam DaweHaving the Paradox Launcher does not make it suddenly have DRM, it doesn't even require a login.Maybe, but it's “telemetry”, so it's definitely inside DRM territory.

Since I've only got the game on Humble, can anyone that has the GOG version check if it requires the Paradox launcher i.e. isn't DRM-free anymore?
