UnCiv, a free and open source remake of Civilization V
8 Jan 2020 at 11:09 pm UTC

Civilization 4 is the best version in the series, with depth and so, so many ways to achieve your goals (and a damn hard AI/difficulty level). This game is available DRM free on GOG, so I see little reason to try out the inferior, dumbed down versions that came after it.

Hopefully they bring the series back to its roots at some point in the future, but I won't hold my breath.

Some of our most anticipated games for Linux in 2020

Wasteland 3 is really the only thing in my sights, but I'll wait until it's out (on Linux...?) and somewhat stable before buying. I liked Wasteland 2, but not unconditionally. Combat is very slow, and for easy peasy stuff it gets kinda tiring. But overall it was a fun game that could branch in different ways.

Quoting: PangaeaI sent an email directly to the developer to ask about this. Partly to inform about the lack of a GOG Linux build in case he wasn't aware of it, and partly in a hope that he can do something to make this happen on GOG's end. It's very frustrating. Time and time again :( Perhaps Eric has 2000 emails and won't get through it until mid-January, but it was worth a shot.

If it was possible to buy and download the game directly from the developer I'd probably just do that instead to be honest. No more problems.
1.4 is released on GOG for Linux now!
Yep, good to finally have it! Installed, updated SMAPI and UI Info suite and it started up. Good first sign :)

Some nice rebates, but with GOG not bothering to release the Stardew Valley update for days on end, I refuse to spend a single cent there.

I'd definitely welcome a DRM Free competitor that cares about Linux. I loved GOG back in the days, but they have changed a lot since then, so there is less reason to be faithful. Probably the only reason they began with Linux at all was that Steam did it, and they've been dragging their feet about it ever since. But all that aside, I find it staggering how they can be so much slower to release for Linux when they get handed the files on a platter from various developers. It's very frustrating. And I bet it's frustrating from the perspective of said developers too.

Some thoughts on Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power

Quoting: mcphailThe biggest disappointment for me was how awful co-op play was in this third instalment. I played the - then - trilogy with my kids and in the first 2 we could pick our characters and come up with inventive ways to get everyone through each scene. In the third, we spent far too much time being rotated out of the screen or all having to play as the same character and following in each others' footsteps. Fatally, without cooperation and invention it is boring. Maybe it is better as a single-player campaign?
Much the same experience here. Played the first two games with a friend, and we had a lot of fun coming up with ways to get over long stretches of lava and whatnot. But in Trine 3 it was more like two people on the same screen in a single player game. With the added grievance (for me) that I kept falling down due to the awkward 3D perspective, while my friend didn't do that quite so much. So that meant I was left staring at the screen until he died or completed a mission (iirc, it's been a few years).

I much preferred the first two games, with probably Trine being the favourite. We never did complete Trine 3 in fairness, it simply wasn't all that much fun, but it doesn't sound like things would have changed much from wherever we were at the time and until the end.

Cross-play worked well, tho, with me on GOG Linux and he on Windows Steam, so that was positive.

Trine and Trine 2 are excellent games, however, and well worth playing.
