Divinity: Original Sin may soon work with Mesa drivers

Quoting: Shmerl
Quoting: M@yeulCEven Steam puts a .steam folder in my home folder...
I see. Then it's already a mess, and doing it for the client can help with moving client data to proper place, but it can also mess up games which check if $XDG_DATA_HOME isn't set, and use $HOME/.local/share when it's not. For those you'll get: $HOME/.local/share/.local/share in result.
I completely agree, but why wouldn't it be set? It is set on my system, and if you change $HOME to point to the XDG_DATA_HOME location, it would be a shame not to ensure that the other variable is set on the system ;)

Quoting: Shmerl
Quoting: M@yeulCBut yeah, the ideal wold be for Valve to enforce this behaviour.
It's really up to individual games to follow the spec. Valve should fix their own client though.
That's a point I do not agree on. In my opinion, Valve has a spec they enforce on games, just like their target platforms have a spec. Games with missing executables Should not be distributed; and I think it should be the same for these folders. Automated testing should ensure both.
That said, sandboxing might be a solution in the long run.

Edit: or a collection of game profiles to Taylor the environment variables to the game, but I am too lazy to compile such a list.

Mesa patched to help render The Witcher 2 correctly on radeonsi

Quoting: soulsourceIs this a fix for a driver issue, or a workaround for broken game-code?
Looks like a pretty generic fix to me (ie, not game-specific). I am not qualified enough to really understand the problem, though :)

Quoting: Shmerl
Quoting: M@yeulCOr in the steam launch options:

HOME=${HOME}/.local/share %command%

This is actually a pretty good idea, and I am considering changing this variable before launching Steam, considering the number of games that behave correctly.
In case of GOG release that would be start.sh, but I don't think it's a good idea to set it for every game, since some do follow XDG base directory spec correctly, and for those you don't want to do it. So setting it individually only for games which mess up $HOME directly is the best approach.
Well, for those that follow the XDG spec correctly, that would be $XDG_DATA_HOME anyway :)
Even Steam puts a .steam folder in my home folder...
But yeah, the ideal wold be for Valve to enforce this behaviour.

AT MY COMMAND, PREPARE THE TREAT CANNON

Seriously, this is great news! I will buy it when it's out, for sure, even if I did not originally intend to do so.

Who would be in for a common surprise? It would be nice to send them, say, a big cake, or something else.

(Just imagine the GOL crowd sending a cake to their colors, as well as the /r/LinuxGaming one, and the -more unlikely- phoronix one). Cakes, cakes everywhere =D

edit: The official announcement is out!

Multiple statistics have shown Linux market-share doing better than ever
9 Jan 2017 at 10:39 am UTC

Quoting: liamdaweI would say Steam is pretty accurate also. As mentioned, Steam is growing and quite quickly in certain markets which is likely dwarfing Linux growth.

Remeber it's a ratio, so a lower % doesn't mean the overall number is lower. Considering how it has been holding with Steam's growing userbase it means our overall number is likely a lot higher than 2 years ago.
Yup. Plus, the survey seems to be in line with the occasional developer sales figures we have (once adjusted for over representation if necessary).

Quoting: ShmerlI also recommend setting this for the game, otherwise it will clutter your $HOME:

HOME=${HOME}/.local/share
Where should I set this?
In the same script that you set workaround hacks. I.e. in runner.sh that comes with the game.
Or in the steam launch options:

HOME=${HOME}/.local/share %command%

This is actually a pretty good idea, and I am considering changing this variable before launching Steam, considering the number of games that behave correctly.

Heroes of Dire, a turn-based combat MMO is available for Linux
5 Jan 2017 at 2:51 pm UTC

It reminds me a bit of Dofus, since I spent quite some time on it lately (yes). But it might just be due to the turn-based MMO part.

Anyway, interesting. I'll follow it, but I am personally not that interested into it.

Eco - Global Survival Game, an incredibly interesting looking game that's already on Linux

Looks very interesting. Just my cup of tea. I am quite tempted by the developer edition, but the price point is a bit too high.

Rich Geldreich, a former Valve developer, has an interesting blog post about Valve supporting Linux and OpenGL
5 Jan 2017 at 8:20 am UTC

That was an interesting read... It sounds like it's calling for an interview, isn't it? (if you do so, Liam, please also ask about the current status of FLOSS drivers)

Now,it isn't like Valve completely abandoned us. I would be happy with just a "back burner" status quo; if it means we can slowly grow. But Valve seems so be doing some stealthy moves, and is apparently working or planning to work on a VR composition system with integrated reprojection and such, IIRC (I didn't look it up, but my point is that they seem to be working on Linux VR).

@Liam, the smiley picker goes over the header bar on my phone, I don't think that's intended :)

The open source 'OpenMW' has released 0.41.0 to further improve Morrowind on Linux

I wish it was bundled on Steam. I guess they could try to sell it/make it available on Steam as a mod.

Is it the case on GOG? I wish a client would take care of the updates, though.
