Any mention of what brand of wifi module and if they learned their lesson on choosing modules for linux?

If they dare say realtek again instead of a brand+model that has know good linux support, i say "sargent mustard with a candelabra in the master bedroom"

Quoting: Guestany competitive game requires a player to outspeed an opponent, what did you expect from a first person shooter?
mandatory pedantic reply: chess
sorry, i just couldn't resist

analog world jokes aside I did play "Sid Meyer's Civilization 2" and "Stars!", which both were turn-based and supported competitive multiplayer... Stars! even supported play-by-email, which is absurdly cumbersome compared to modern multiplayer gaming options, but was pretty cool in the era of 56kbps dialup internet

I also rather play slower paced games, mainly because my reflexes are horribly slow for anything else

And despite the rise in prominence of competitive online multiplayer realtime games like shooters, battle royales and whatnot there are popular modern takes for slower gameplay too (eg: League of Legends's non-rts offspring TFT)

Robot Gentleman dev of 60 Seconds! blasts Unity, switches to Godot and increases funding

Quoting: PhlebiacHopefully these devs (and others) make an effort towards native Linux versions as part of their switch to Godot.
AFAIK it's much easier to make a linux version of a game with Godot than with Unity3D.

At the very least there will be less linux-specific bugs in the native linux versions of games that opt for it. Unity was notoriously terrible in this regard and while the situation improved over the years it never got solved entirely.

IIRC Godot made also made it pretty easy to pack up android versions of games for testing and final deployment (I read an article once a couple years ago about how it works and why it was unusually easy), so mobile game devs might enjoy jumping ship more than they expected.

It's likely Godot will absorb a huge chunk of the devs fleeing Unity3D, but I'm confident at least some devs in niches better covered by other engines and tools will find their way to those other tools now or later.

Remaking a game is a huge task. I expect most serious devs will spend some time making their due diligence to ensure the new branch they jump to isn't as frail as the one they are jumping out off.

Our engineers will also contribute to the development of the engine, as we pursue our next and future projects in Godot.
This is how key FOSS projects pick up speed, catch up with paid alternatives that have been well established market leaders and sometimes end up surpassing them.

Many thanks to Unity3D leadership for the huge help pitching Godot for everyone.

A shame it had to happen in such a painful way for so many game devs...

Game porter Ethan Lee offers services to maintain old games for developers
5 Sep 2023 at 1:56 pm UTC Likes: 9

Ethan seemingly did everything right in his carrier, and I reslly mean *everything*

He made ports, tools to make ports easier, crossplatform libs that are drop-in replacements for windows-exclusive libs (with extra benefits), a whole tour-de-force of crossplatform development and publishing best practices, an awesome business model and now an even more awesome business model that works in the long run even in a saturated market, even while competing with proton on linux, and even for devs that don't have or don't wan't to spend a lot of cash on supporting other platforms...

...at scale, for dozens of games

Steam Deck recently had two Beta releases, here's what's changed

you could try to disable Steam's and use an alternative OSK like CoreKeyboard or Onboard

this has the extra benefit of offering Ctrl, Alt and FN-1/12 keys depending on the OSK app you install, something many folks complain is sorely missing in Steam's

for folks missing the screenshot notifications: check if they're on or off in steam settings

maybe Valve just changed the default state to be less intrusive by default but you still have the option to (re)enable them

iirc there is a setting just for this that exists since forever, that was on by default
