It's not often a game can make me stand by and go "wow", but the new Starbound update and trailer has made me do just that.

There's a whopping amount of new content, features and bug fixes in this that I suggest you read the update notes.

Looks like I will have to do a Starbound livestream rather soon then! I will be playing some later tonight, and if it goes well I could livestream it if people are interested.

About Starbound
In Starbound, you take on the role of a character who’s just fled from their home planet, only to crash-land on another. From there you’ll embark on a quest to survive, discover, explore and fight your way across an infinite universe.

You’ll encounter procedurally generated creatures and weapons, discover populated villages and abandoned temples. Explore planets dotted with dungeons, eyeball trees and treasure. Make use of over a hundred materials and over one thousand in-game objects to build a sprawling modern metropolis or a sleepy secluded cabin in the woods, and do all of it alone or with friends!

Starbound is a much much deeper, more complex game, but it's nowhere near gold-released, which people don't get. What you can play is just basically still alpha, not feature complete, not properly balanced, not done. You can go and play but you have to expect the game will feel unfinished, because it is.

Meanwhile Terraria is confined to much smaller scope and it's very simple in comparison, but quite "done", filed out, neatly packed and ready. They still make updates but the game is already a coherent, relatively balanced experience.

So, if you want a honest opinion for what's best to do - play Terraria right now, and wait for Starbound to be truly finished, regardless of how many years it could still take.

I wish I could go back in time and take back the $75 spent on copies of Starbound in exchange for 7 more copies of Terraria in addition to the 5 copies I've already purchased.

Starbound is broken. They still call it a sandbox but the game requires you to follow it's strict path in order to progress. It's being dumbed down, sadly. Was a lot of fun in earlier versions last year, but now I consider it shelfware.

The game is very shiny and looks nice but soon uninteresting after the first planet you visit. I'd not recommend buying it now. Hopefully it will be polished and made fun before final release, whenever that might be. (Game's been in beta for two years)

It's a great game. Devs can't cater to everybody's taste. Last year people were complaining it was too sandbox with not enough features. Now there suddenly there are too many features and the game is too engaging. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Terraria lost me in about 15 minutes. Starbound is superior game as it is and every update only increases the margin.

Starbound is a lot of fun to me, I haven't been to impressed by Terraria in comparison.
Starbound just seems way more polished now even though it's in beta. it may not have the survival parts anymore, i'm guessing chucklefish wants to go for more of a 2D action game anyway. which is fine with me. there's a mod that brings back most of the same survival parts to the game if people want that.
I think this game is going in a good direction, I just can't wait for more of the main story. with mods like Starbound Side Stories, helps to make the game a whole lot better and the wait for content a lot easier to bear.
the mods for this game are what can really help make it a lot better, there are a number of great ones that give more sandbox style content. Plus chucklefish supplies the binary command files for linux so we can modify and make our own mods. not many games have been doing that.

Haven't played Starbound in a little while. I'll have to check it out again. (Last time I played I had explored the first planet in depth, going to the core below and building a HUGE tower up and up! Fun times. I also went all the way around the planet and found a temple on the far side. Interesting to explore.)
