Postal 2 No Longer Being Worked On By Icculus, RWS Taking It In-house

I'm a bit late on actually covering this, but any fans of Postal 2 will know that the Linux version is rather far behind Windows in terms of updates due to how busy Icculus is, so RunningWithScissors has taken it in-house.

One day recently I got this out of the blue tweet from RWS:

What are we missing?

Well Postal 2 was updated a lot in the past year, and sadly not much (if any) of it has made it's way to Linux. We are missing things like steam cloud, steam workshop, and absolutely tons of new content.

We don't have the Apocalypse weekend mod integrated into the game, we don't have all the lovely new vocal content, dismemberment was put into the entire game, missing new weapons, and the list goes on. That's a lot we don't have.

So, here's to hoping now that RWS has finally taken it in-house we will see all the new features, fixes and expansions that Windows Postal 2 players have been getting. We hope when they get this sorted they can work from one code-base and not rely on others to port for them so we don't end up waiting again.

Sadly the main stream press have successfully managed to convince many rational people it's nothing but a hate group, which serves to cover their own asses.

Still, really appreciate you looking at it from our side despite your anti stance. And yeah, you're totally right, us taking P2 in house has nothing to do with Ryan's view GG (the decision was made before GG) nor has this situation altered the respect we hold for Ryan or the appreciation of all he's done for us the last 10 years(!). The dude has a ton of plates spinning no doubt, and surely prioritizes his paid contracts over us (as anyone would). For reasons we'll never understand, he has never and will still not accept any payment from us in order to contract him officially as much as we'd love him to.

It's been nearly a year since the first Windows updates and Mac and Linux users, and six months or so since we've been ready to port, yet they are still stuck on the original build and we know this is unacceptable (we're taking a lot of heat from it, Mac and Linux make up 10% of our user base which would probably be higher if we had the updates out there). We've ordered some Macs and given our lead coder some time to dig into SDL, so we hope we can bring it to you guys sooner rather than later. Might still take a while, but at least we are fully accountable now for any further delays.

Thanks for the clarifications. :)

I will however say that when it comes to GG my impressions do not really come from the mainstream press but rather from my connections in the Indie gaming industry, although I do admit to not really following the matter all that closely so I may indeed be missing out on some of the subtleties.

Still, I can assure that you that none of this has affected my support for RWS as a developer.
Thanks man, welcome reasoned voices on both sides! I think the problem is there is not enough of that going on which is why it's easy to end up on one extreme of the argument.

We reject any harassment on any side but refuse to accept that GG is a primalry a hate movement after spending a month looking into it before we posted our article. Writing off GG's points because of a few crazies seems as wrong to us as writing off all Museums due to terrorists, or all Animal rights supporters because some actually do cause harm to people. Crazy people out there will try and hijack any cause, sadly.

We stand a lot to lose from supporting GG, and the possibility that Ryan will never talk to us again is very real (and would be sad), but we felt we had to come out on the side of the core gamer here who we feel are not being heard. We never had the best relationship with the gaming press and I doubt this will help

FWIW, not everyone in RWS is pro GG, but no one is anti it. Our lead artist and designer is female and we have a pretty diverse mix of people both ethnically and in their sexual preference. Thought that was worth pointing out before people start to say 'well yeah you would say that you bunch of CIS white readnecks!' lol.

Opps, guess we are getting into it here, well that's the last we'll say on the matter as it's not relevant really on this site, what is, is that we have managed to compile the Linux code :) This is a small first step and we have a long way to go, we might reach out to you guys for help beta testing when we get that far.
