Civilization VI for Linux is no longer certain, only a possibility

Civilization VI was originally announced for Linux back in May, since then we've had a lot of silence on it, until today. Aspyr Media seem to be the developer handling it, but they are still investigating if it's viable.

Taken from their blog:
QuoteQ: Is Civ VI available on Linux?
A: Linux is still being investigated as a project. We hope to have clarity in coming months on if a viable version of Civ VI can make it to Linux and will let you know as soon as we have more information.

Aspyr have also been commenting some more on reddit:
QuoteI'm sorry guys. I should know better than to post in here before picking up my toddler for a TexMex dinner. You guys are incredibly active, and that's a huge part of why we love you.

I know its not a detailed statement, but it is absolutely full truth. Just because we are using OGL, that does not automatically translate to a workable Linux port. There are tons of complexities there (as you all well know). We have our team head down on proving that it can be done up to our quality standards. Once we know that, we will share the news.

This is a real shame to see it change from a confirmed port, to only something that's being investigated.

I can only hope if they are unable to do it, that another developer picks it up. I would love to see Aspyr Media handle it though, as their other ports are good and I have a lot of respect for them as developers, but if they can't, then someone else needs to step up. It's a bit weird indeed. If it's viable on Mac, it's certainly viable on Linux. From a tech perspective anyway. And since they already have the Mac port, it should be from a commercial point of view as well. Unless the Mac port is Metal only.

Aspyr probably asked for more money. 2K is a money-making machine, so they'll probably find someone else to do the Linux port. They won't leave cheese on the table.

Here are some quotes form Aspyr's website (( bearing in mind they went from very active on the Linux gaming reddit page and on here to silent 6 months ago ))

QuoteAspyr Media is celebrating our 20th birthday this week with our first ever games catalog wide sale across Steam and Apple’s Mac App Store! W
Quotespecial birthday events lined up including: iMAC & ASPYR GAME CATALOG SWEEPSTAKES

Their first few blog entries. Even their url description on search used to say they were a Mac developer, although that has changed recently.

the front page. No other platform mentioned. The only time they mention windows is when they say also coming to 'PC'. Can't it be accepted now that they are mostly a Mac developer and move on.

QuoteHi, we’re Aspyr Media...

Established in 1996 and headquartered in Austin, TX, we’re the leading publisher of Mac® games, bringing blockbuster gaming franchises including Call of Duty®, Sid Meier's Civilization®, Star Wars™, Borderlands™, SimCity™, and more to Mac computers around the world.

Yes they mention Linux & PC ( aren't they the same thing ) but that is in a separate paragraph not the main statement.

Id like to be proven wrong on this, but for now at least it seems Aspyr media is done with Linux.

Quoting: BTREI wonder just what it is they're investigating. With their system requirements needing fairly new and higher end Apple hardware, thus limiting the customer base, you'd think that Linux would be the bigger market in comparison. That said, I saw this coming when OSX depots showed up on steamdb but no Linux ones followed. Still leaves me disappointed, bitter and wishing that companies were more transparent instead of no news for months and then bombshells.

Was just confirmed for mac :/ on facebook. No mention of linux.

#CivilizationVI is coming to Mac! Preorder now! #2K #AspyrMedia http://ow.ly/gxEr304Ra04

@Liam - Maybe reach out to someone to clarify the situation?

This sounds like that other situation with GOG where the dude who said nay was completely clueless as to the situation.

Civ 6 graphics seem like a downgrade from Civ 5, and it will be new and lacking maturity and polish (as was the case with Civ 5 until all the DLC fixed Civ 5)

Their Beyond Earth game wasn't good at all, my girl who loves 5 and plays on her Archbox all the time demo'd it and it was lackluster. I bet sales weren't so stellar as their development took a turn for the worst.

I seriously hope Civ 6 had as good of a crew as Civ 5 because 5 was beast and 6 looks like 3D grit lacking, polished, amateur garbage.

Even though it looks terrible so far, in the hopes that it one day becomes as awesome or more than Civ 5 I hope they just had a internal fsckup and aren't legit about pulling out. PC gaming will inevitably be SteamOS.

SteamOS is the only platform that will truely protect investors and consumers from the middleman fscking everything up like they always do - Windows Store, Apple AppStore -- you know how long a AppReview can take to get your new version pushed out on the AppStore - I've heard up to 8 - 10 months in nightmare scenario's.

Now, call me crazy - but that doesn't sound like a very stable environment for game development investors to put all their chips in on, and then the appstore can just say "Nah, we don't agree or like your thing so we refuse service." -- this has been the case for various comics on Apple's AppStore, and Windows is the new Apple but even more evil. Everyone always expected Apple to look out first for their own interests, but Windows is going out of it's way to be evil spying on users File Tree, Cortona Search Queries, Files, Data, Keystrokes, etc... and they've been responsible for some of the biggest clusterfsck's in PC gaming history - Games for Windows Live? What a fscking hit!

Windows 8? Another hit. Windows Vista? Brilliant! Windows Millennium Edition? Fantastic.

Any developer who sits exclusively on Windows or Mac camp is gonna get their buttox burned when the stove turns on.

No, this comes direct from Aspyr Media as linked to in the article. They have also commented on reddit now too:
QuoteWe are still investigating the technical feasibility of it. I say that because we will NOT bring a substandard version to Linux, no matter how much we want to see that happen.
Colombo Oct 5, 2016
Darn. I was waiting for it. Additionally, they say that it will be released for "PC" and they have steam/steamOS logo on their website. But, with current devs, this can mean anything.

Disappointed.
Edmene Oct 5, 2016
A sad news, I just wonder what is technically making it harder to port for Linux this time.
soft_as_snow Oct 5, 2016
It's a nice way of letting Linux users down. Companies are always afraid to drop the bomb outright and would rather lead us on hoping we will go away and forget. Street Fighter 5 for Linux anyone?
I say this is an indication its not happening.

Yet again, the lack of transparency brings ludicrous conspiracy theories... Maybe one day the companies will understand that they don't have to hide everything.

In the meantime, I would not blame Aspyr if the port doesn't happen. Maybe Firaxis devs decided to use proprietary techs that aren't available on Linux and they're investigating on a possible replacement that doesn't involve rewriting the whole engine.
