A casual reminder that I rely on your funding through Patreon to stay alive

By - | Views: 21,926
Thanks to everyone who is already funding, I have been able to put out more interesting stuff than I ever could be before. Here's a small reminder that I rely on you guys to keep GOL going!

The Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/liamdawe

I'm already amazed at the level of support I have and I hope more decide to support me in future too.

I provide HTTPS for free by default for everyone (as it should be), all features are generally available to everyone (apart from the dark theme), the ability to set how many comments you see per-page, the release calendar and so on.

I am also committed to never hiding any content behind a paywall, that will simply never happen here.

Without your help, GOL would simply not be here. Thanks to you guys we now have a pretty damn good server with people at hand to fix server-side issues, allowing me more time to just get stuff done.

One thing my Patreon supporters have asked of me is to do more interviews, so I am working on that. I already published one today with the developer of Tether. I have another one pretty much ready and an interview with Feral will be hopefully coming soon too. I am hoping to line up at the very least one interview every single month from now on.

What I don't want to do is remind people about Patreon all the time (I just want to get on with it and do it), as I know it can be annoying. I haven't put out an article asking for support since March and won't do again for some time.

Also a sidenote: When people decide to stop funding, they can enter a comment to explain why. I am never able to see who it's from, and it's entirely optional but one caught my eye:
Anonymous PersonNo longer comfortable pledging to an individual when the site is build on the content/contributions of many

I actually found that quite interesting! So I wrote a script which you can now find here to see who has done what (along with other fun info). Hopefully that gives a clear idea of my commitment here.

To be clear on this one: anyone who contributes to GOL does so out of their own free time because they want to. They do get the offer of free keys when I have them too. I am extremely appreciative of anyone who contributes anything, be it articles or funding.

Thank you for your support and keep buying awesome Linux games! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I understand that apprehension, and I feel it sometimes too, but one thing to keep in mind is that your credit card provider/bank probably has your back. If for some reason a given company keeps charging you after you've cancelled a subscription, your provider/bank will probably block/revert the transactions for you and possibly blacklist the company if they keep getting complaints. Depends on whom you do business with and your agreements of course, but I know I feel pretty safe with my own credit card.

Last year a hotel in the U.S. charged me then issued a refund for three "cancelled reservations" I had not made in the first place, but by the time they had sorted it out, the fluctuation in exchange rates (I'm in Canada) amounted to me getting shafted for I think $80. The hotel said they couldn't do anything about it because they had refunded the same amount charged (which was true in USD but that doesn't help me). I reported the situation to my credit card provider and they paid me the balance themselves, no questions asked.

Wish I could help, but broke myself. What little money I can put on the side, away from hungry student loans, is part of the fund I call "keeping me sane, so I don't end up in the psychiatric ward," as I got anxiety problem, which can easily degenerate into depression.

No problem at all, please don't in any way feel forced or bad for not being able to do so :)

To everyone: Thank you again :)

I wanted to sign up just to pay for a year at a time cause I hate subs on web sites I never use for anything (patreon in this case). But after signing up I found out I can use PP and that was a nice surprise. I only saw CC posts in the help section.

Not that I'm a big fan of PP but it's one site less to manage payments on since I have to use it for other things :)

Not in a position to donate monthly, sadly. About that comment though - while it's true that sometimes there are contributions by other people than Liam, I cannot help but feel that without his continued work and efforts, this site wouldn't be where it is today.

People have to keep in mind that Liam doesn't just write articles, he also benchmarks games, contacts developers/publishers when required and of course work on the GoL website itself.

I've checked other Linux gaming sites in the past and they don't come as close to this. I can't donate (yet) but I greatly appreciate all the work done here. Thank you.

You would be surprised at the amount of time that actually gets spent on replying to developer emails and giving them release advice. So many developers have my private email address as it's on some indie developer contact list it's crazy.

Can easily end up being 1-2 hours a day on emails alone. That may not sound like much, but it sure does add up.

I use this on several servers and enables me to add SSL to all my projects for free :-D.

Just sayin' you could save some money regarding the SSL ;).
