Valve put the Steam Controller and Steam Link on a big sale again

By - | Views: 21,598

Still haven't picked up a Steam Controller or Steam Link? This latest sale might tempt you to do so as they're cheap. Note: These are not affiliate links, just highlighting a good deal.

You can buy them as a bundle, with 55% off for £35.98 which is pretty fantastic.

Separately, you can by the Steam Controller with 30% off for £27.99 and also the Steam Link, with 70% off for £11.99.

I will likely never find a use for the Steam Link in my house right now, since I have a PC hooked up to my TV. The Steam Controller however has uses that never end. Great for the majority of games I've played with it, not all mind you, but most. It also doubles up as the remote for my TV PC using SC Controller and it works so nicely.

Quoting: GuestThat's a huge discount. Maybe also trying to get ridd of inventory, so they can introduce the next gen versions.
They actually run these sales quite a lot :)

I did get a Steam Link the last time it went on sale. And I am not using it.

First of all, you want wired network, or really high quality wireless. And even then it is recommended to have either the PC or the Steam Link wired.

I got it to work mostly smoothly over wireless + wired configuration, but some random interference would still cause a latency spike once in a while. Which always seem to happen at the worst possible moment.

The video quality itself is very good. And I didn't notice much performance degradation in games either. Which was surprising, because my graphics card was already struggling. It seems to be more CPU bound, at least with software encoding, and I do have a decent CPU.

Latency itself is not too bad, but it is there, and it is noticeable. Not much of a problem for sofa gaming with a controller, but for competitive or any twitch reflex gaming it's a no go. For example I had problems playing Race the Sun, as I struggled to time the maneuvers to avoid obstacles.

But the real deal breaker for me was very limited peripheral support. Namely no wheel and pedals. There is a third party application that claims to enable that, but the reviews on Steam were largely negative, so I didn't bother.

It is nice piece of technology, and can be useful if you have the right setup. But make sure that you know what you are getting.

Now now, while no one may really know what they're doing with them, this has nothing to do with Steam Machines. Apart from the obvious, Valve don't control vendors pricing on their systems.

i know, i'm just disapointed/venting, and i cant see news related to steam link without remembering that.

(i'm not sure if venting is the right world, google sugested it, its the only word that i used that i had to use google translate)

I think the only game I've had any latency in was Sundered. Otherwise something even as picky as Super Meat Boy seems to work fine. A lot of that latency is in the game.

I love my Steam Controllers. Tempting to just replace my Roccat Tyon mice with them. Wish I could use the Steam Controller to replace the PS4 one as well.

I don't know why I looked at the page.
"coming soon", as for the last 2 years...

I honestly don't understand it. I live in Switzerland and it's not available, but it is in the uk, France, Germany and Italy.
Basically all of western Europe, except Switzerland.

And yes, I know that I can get it from import (with a 40% price increase), but I am a keyboard and mouse guy anyway, so...

Do they figure since you guys stayed out of 'The Wars' that you don't like the FPS, so why allow you to buy a controller? :P

But the controller doesn't work in every game. They have yet to fix a Steam controller bug in Saints Row IV. Plus the part about it hatpic feedback is so pointless unless you are using Windows. It doesnt even work in Steam OS\linux. If I was a linux user I wouldn't buy this controlled.

:P That would imply that they update their products

Very true. Over the past year they have both been on sale multiple times! The controller 7 times and the link 8 (steamdb.info). It's not every month, but it's pretty darn close.
