SUPERHOT, a first-person shooter where time moves extremely slowly until you move, released originally way back in February 2016, just got a rather nice update for Linux gamers.

What changed? From their update notes:

  • Fixed game crashing on Linux. Some Linux players couldn't run the game. Now they can. Yay.
  • Spread the system achievement available for Linux players. Linux achievement hunters will be finally able to max out.
  • Rebaked lightmaps on some levels for Linux version.
  • Fixed Pumpkin Spiced achievement not working for some players.
  • Fixed font size and typos in piOS menu
  • Removed minor bugs on both Linux and Windows version.

They also said "This time we showed a bit more love towards Linux players." which is pretty nice to see.

I remember the release well, as it really was quite buggy but I did enjoy it a lot. I still get annoyed by the constant "SUPER HOT SUPER HOT" but outside of that it's such a unique experience you really do need to try out.

I do also still think the whole "time moves only when you move" is a bit of a naff description they gave it, as it's clearly not true. Splitting hairs though, it's such a minor thing.

You can find it on Humble Store and Steam. Also on GOG but it hasn't got the update yet.

IIRC, the story is broken if you don't set the LC_COLLATE=C environment variable (with the game depending on locale-specific file sorting to pick the next level). I wonder if they fixed that as well?
I backed this game, but I admit I have so much fun stuff to play, and so little time, that I haven't gotten around to finish this one.

I don't have any environment variable set and managed to play the full story (almost, never finished the last level... shame on me, finishing the boring - ihmo - story is the only way to enjoy the game freely) so maybe it has been fixed. :|

It only happens if you have a locale that sorts differently than the one on the developer's machines, though. I believe I used FR_fr.utf-8 (on slackware) back then.

The VR version is a blast to play via Proton.

Strange as I should have been on Fr_fr.utf-8 too when I played the game (maybe it has been fixed, I've only played SUPERHOT in 2017 I think). :|

Edit: worth mentioning that a previous update (1.0.9 from January 2019) brings key bindings support which is a great improvment (previously I was forced to change my keyboard layout from "fr" to "en" before launching the game)! :) (I lost all my progression when migrating from Ubuntu 16.04 to Kubuntu 18.04 as the game as no Steam Cloud backup and I forgot to backup that on my side... will have to play the story again :'()

I'm gonna buy this game when I get the Valve VR set this summer. That's too damn sure.

Keep in mind the VR is a separate purchase at the full $25 asking price.

Ah! I didn't know that. Thanks!

Quoting: GuestInteresting; I believe that’s why I removed the game from my wishlist months ago. But does it support bépo? (accented characters…)
Also it’s still way too expensive compared to the less than 2 hours playtime…

Well... I don't know for bépo but now you can, through a GUI, set a key for a specific action (it's a very light FPS in this field, you only need 5 keys outside left and right mouse button, 4 for moving and 1 for action) so I don't think that bépo is a problem (AZERTY isn't as far I can tell). There is definitively more than 2 hours worth of gaming I think (the "story" - that try to break the "4th wall" without succeeding - is definitively not worth buying the game ihmo, but the gameplay definitively is), but I do not recommended the game at full price (imho it's more < 15€). :)
