Kalypso Media form new studio to work on next-gen Commandos games

By - | Views: 15,912

Now that Kalypso Media own the rights to the Commandos franchise, along with a remaster of Commandos 2 coming to Linux next year, they're now planning more.

Announced today, Kalypso Media have formed their third internal development studio to be based in Germany's Greater Frankfurt. They have announced that industry veteran Jürgen Reußwig will be the Studio Director, with the new as-yet-unnamed studio's explicit task being the creation of a next-generation entry in the Commandos strategy series.

From the press release:

“The establishment of a new studio is a clear commitment to Kalypso’s growth plans for the coming years as we looked to expand our internal and external development efforts” says Simon Hellwig, Managing Director and founder of Kalypso Media Group GmbH. “Commandos is a great, globally-recognized brand and we will do our utmost to meet the expectations of the worldwide gaming community. We can’t wait to get started.”

Studio Director Jürgen Reußwig adds: “At the new site we’ll be looking to develop a truly worthy successor to Commandos, designed for both PC and console platforms for simultaneous worldwide release. On a personal level, I couldn’t be prouder to be working on a true icon of strategy gaming, and I’m looking forward to receiving applications from new and experienced developers alike that share our passion for the series.”

They have a number of job openings for the new studio, you can find them here.

Kalypso Media have long been a friendly publisher for Linux games, with tons of titles from them available on Linux and more on the way. This is good news for the future of the Commandos series since they have full control over it. Once they announce clear platforms (we're on their list to inform), we will let you know.

I don't want to be Negative Nancy either, but how many projects announce to deliver for Windows, Mac, Linux and consoles and then discover halfway through development that the middleware they're using for their Windows and console builds isn't available for Mac and Linux, so these targets "stop making business sense" and get cut?

On the plus side, it's Kalypso. They and Paradox are the two most Linux friendly of the bigger publishers, and have a long track history of publishing for Linux. So there is some hope that the guys working for that new studio know what they're doing.
