A quick look over recent and upcoming Linux game releases

By - | Views: 21,259

With so many games being released, announced and teased it's often hard to keep on top of things so we're here to help. Going over a good few pages and hundreds of articles, here's a quick round-up in case you've missed any.

Just a note: this is nowhere near an exhaustive list, just a brief selection of titles we don't want you to miss.

Starting off with some actually released games, in case you're in the mood for a new game this weekend here's a hand-picked list of recent goodies:

That's just a really small slice of some fun titles in the last month or so. If you have been struggling to keep up with new releases, you're in luck. Every single tag on GOL is also an RSS feed you can subscribe to. Like the New Release tag for example, look for the RSS icon.

As for what to look forward to in future, there's plenty of that too. Cherry-picking a few interesting titles:

Other fun recent announcements or upcoming games we're excited about that have no date attached to them:

One thing about Linux gaming is for certain: it's never boring. Do keep in mind though, dates and games without dates may take longer right now, due to the current worldwide health situation with COVID-19.

Hopefully you found this quick round-up helpful.

Beyond Blue is due in June for World Oceans Week, and while Spiritfarer and Book of Travels don't have definite dates I can't imagine either being all that much behind it.

And don't forget that Imposter Factory and Chained Echoes are both due by the end of the year as well.

What about Metro Exodus or cuphead or Darksiders Genesis or any more Feral ports?

Is Cuphead supposed to be heading to Linux? I don't think I've heard anything about that, except for the Linux version made for Tesla cars.

Cuphead? No. Darksiders Genesis? No.

Not sure why either were mentioned, neither have been said to be coming.

As for Feral ports, they appear to have transitioned quite a bit over to mobile and switch. Both Linux and macOS don't seem to be as big a focus for them recently. I still expect GRID is from them and we have Total War SAGA Troy confirmed by them.

I sort of wondered (feared) that most of their Linux releases were always because it was fairly straight forward to do a macOS release alongside development of a Linux one. But with Apple making the platforms more different than they should be, it is no longer the case, and with out the Apple ports, they don't work on the Linux ones either?
To be fair though, the Switch IS Linux, just not x86... would be sad if we lost Feral, but clearly they need to go where the money is at.

It's based on FreeBSD, just like PS4.

With various components from Android on top. They've created an abomination. :O

We sure about that? I always thought it was based on nvidia's tegra X1 chip, and directly used Linux. Was not aware FreeBSD had tegra support. Though I guess that makes sense, as the binary is very similar across all three (Windows, Linux, BSD).
