SPRAWL has me excited. A brand new upcoming hardcore first-person shooter, set in a huge cyberpunk megalopolis and it will be coming to Linux.

"SPRAWL is a hardcore retro FPS set in an endless cyberpunk megapolis. Escape the walled city and take on the militarized government of the sprawl. Fueled by the blood of your enemies and a mysterious voice in your head, make your way towards the spire to topple whatever lays within."

Appearing recently on Steam as a coming soon title with no release date set, check out the recent footage below:

Even though it's clearly a work in progress, it's another time where I feel like I absolutely need to play it. Love the merging of modern touches with a clearly retro inspired game. Looks like it's one to look forward to.

On Twitter, one of the developers confirmed it will be available for Linux "The plan currently is to release both for Windows and Linux. I'm a big fan of Linux and use it when I can! It's definitely something I want to make happen." - Hannah Crawford.

SPRAWL is a hardcore retro FPS set in an endless cyberpunk megapolis. Here the streets are your playground. The dark alleys and dilapidated apartments are all surfaces compatible with your “icarus” cybernetic implant. This implant allows you to perform gravity defying acrobatic wall-running maneuvers. Your enemies, the militarized police of the sprawl, stand no chance. Not only that, but their blood fuels this same implant, vastly enhancing your reaction time. On command you can enter a state in which even bullets move at a snail's pace. A vast arsenal of weapons lie at your disposal, the armies of the corporate government are endless, but be warned...

the sprawl eventually consumes us all.

In a further tweet, Crawford also teased it already running on Linux (specifically Pop!_OS):

Wait... what....

Was that a double-barrelled shotgun jump? About 7:20ish minutes.

This game seems to have influences from old-school id shooters, DOOM (2016), DOOM Eternal, and Source games (HL2 in particular). Could be one to watch closely.

Looking at the cyberpunk setting I wouldn't be surprised if the name comes from Gibson's classic Sprawl trilogy.

Now that is a good way to showcase your game. No list of fake screenshot and "in-engine" fake gameplay like most AA games. Just straight into action and show off the gameplay.

And after Valheim and Prodeus, another demonstration of how low resolution textures and less detailed models can still look amazing if you get the atmosphere right.

Wishlisted.

Edit: I also see that the dev screenshot is ultrawide. So that bodes well for proper ultrawide support!

Chances are high I will buy and play this. But c'mon... How is this not a Ghostrunner-clone? Unless the developers started their work before that gameplay came out. I read that SPRAWL is inspired by other games like Mirror's Edge... And as it happens... Ghostrunner also took many elements from the Mirror's Edge games.

Given that GhostRunner only launched late last year, I'd be gobsmacked if there's any inspiration here. I get what you mean though, especially with the ghostly-voice-in-your-head narrative. Very similar.

Ghostrunner is more like a puzzle game though - one shot and you're dead. I like the approach here better, where you're allowed to cock up a fair bit and can keep strafe running, jumping and shooting to turn things around.

Also bullet-time. Love it!

My sound was turned off, so I did not even know about the ghostly-voice-in-your-head. I was more talking about the sword+cyberpunk+bullettime (in combination with Mirror's Edge running).

Anyway, don't get my wrong. I want SPRAWL to be a success. :)
