Future sci-fi indie RPG Beyond Mankind: The Awakening now on Linux

By - | Views: 16,228

Time to go back to Earth and retake it. Beyond Mankind: The Awakening from developer Brytenwalda recently released a native Linux version, built with the Unity game engine. The developer previously worked on the Viking Conquest DLC for Mount & Blade.

Beyond Mankind: The Awakening takes place in a future destroyed by some sort of genetic mutation. This caused certain types of people to go a bit wild, and eventually it led to war and almost a total annihilation of planet Earth. Mankind survived in space - and now you're part of the rag-tag group trying to bring it all back to life.

Game Features:

  • Intriguing and dark narrative - Beyond Mankind provides a unique experience in which you will discover a post-apocalyptic world through the main story and secondary quests shaped by your decisions.
  • A rich and dynamic world - Help human civilization, exiled in space, avoid extinction while exploring an Earth devastated by nuclear war.
  • Unique character generation - Create a character based on DNA and culture selection, then accumulate experience to improve your abilities.
  • Complex social interactions - Experience personality-based kinship, loyalty, and romance with other characters.
  • Real dilemmas - Face problems that may not always have a completely positive solution, let alone an obvious one.
  • Challenging survival mechanics - Explore, collect or hunt for food, craft tools, light fires for cooking and warmth, and construct a shelter. Above all, monitor your psychological state.
  • 3D inventory management - Pick your resources at your camp. Storage space is limited, so choosing well can make the difference between life and death.

The story seemed interesting enough but there's currently a bug I encountered which prevented my play-through, which I've reported so hopefully I can pick it up again in future.

Available to buy on Steam.

It's only showing Windows for me.
Ignore that, it does have a Linux version, they probably forgot/didn't bothered to update the steam page.

Might wanna force the vulkan build with -force-vulkan since the OpenGL build is somewhat under-performing.

in the full version the game did freeze for me with vulkan. I can use the menu but if I start a game the game freezes in the loading screen.
I'm not sure if the Vulkan build is even tested. From what I've seen so far, many devs only test the GL build, and the Vulkan option is available only because is added by default by Unity (for Linux builds). Which sucks because while Vulkan might offer better performance, it tends to be buggy (since is not tested).
Might be worth to report this.

The Steam reviews for this game aren't exactly inspiring... maybe if they fix the issues Liam reported, he will do a followup on whether it's looking better.

Quoting: RaabenHm, never knew Steam would download the right platform without showing it on the page. Nice.

I'm very surprised. Would expect that the same flag makes both work - or both not work.
Hi, guys!

We're from Brytenwalda Studios, and we wanted to drop by to thank you for your kind words and your interest in Beyond Mankind!

Regarding the demo:
Quoting: PublicNuisanceIs anyone else fed up with this annoying trend of developers not having a Linux version of their demo ? Also the part of the Linux system requirements including passmark scores is funny since it has no Linux version. I hope the game is good and I am lad they made a Linux version but the above is reason to be concerned about how much effort they put into the Linux port.

So I tried the demo which ran using Proton. The game was kind of janky, but the story; character creation; and RPG elements were all solid.

Same here.
As someone else in the comments already pointed out, the demo is available on Linux, even if it isn't showing on Steam. We're currently looking into it to fix it so that it shows in the store page.

If any of you is experiencing issues, please let us know so we can look into them. We'll be paying attention to any comments and reports we receive through Steam discussions, Discord or any of our social media, which you can find in our Steam page. We're listening to your feedback.

Thank you!

Sadly yeah the native client runs pretty poorly. OpenGL 30-55 FPS range. with vulkan argument it gets 60+ but with weird frametime spike every 5 sec or so. With proton it runs smooth™
