Ready for another turn-based RPG with some rogue-lite mechanics, with the addition of a pretty strange storyline? The Hand of Merlin is out now with Native Linux support.

The Hand of Merlin is a turn-based rogue-lite RPG in which Arthurian legend clashes with dark and foreboding sci-fi horror. This unusual merging of genres introduces a wholly unique sci-fi element to its storytelling. Utilizing both squad-based and turn-based combat, players can employ tactical cunning to use cover, set up ambushes and coordinate attacks with ranged, melee and spell-casting combat to conquer both human and unworldly abhorrent creatures and other enemy characters they encounter on their quest.

From the press release:

“Throughout Early Access we’ve committed a lot of time and energy into community feedback with a series of updates that have really embellished the games features and replayability based upon what the community was telling us, we’re extremely pleased with the results and the work the team has done to make The Hand of Merlin a truly competitive rogue-lite RPG.“ Said Robert Sajko Creative Director at Room C Games.

You can buy it on Humble Store and Steam. Currently the GOG version is only for Windows so you could try Wine. It's 40% off until June 21st.

I bought this less than a week ago, so before the actual release. It was completely unplayable. The whole screen was translucent, so that you could see whatever was behind it. I have no idea if it was a dual-monitor problem or what. I didn't bother trying to troubleshoot it. I just got a refund. Perhaps they fixed it with the update, but Idk.

Damn, the concept seems so cool.

I really hope they'll release the macOS/Linux builds on GOG...

There's a lot about this game that appeals to me, but it really seems to me like it needs a massive graphical overhaul. Every time they showed in-game footage of the combat, I had trouble differentiating the characters from the background (the graboids notwithstanding).

Edit: Just saw that the developer referred to representation in games as "crap." That's all I need to know to lose all interest in this.
