Valve and their partner CodeWeavers are working towards the next major upgrade of Proton, the compatibility layer for running Windows games on Linux and the Steam Deck.

Proton 7.0-3 just had a first public Release Candidate build, while they ask for some help testing to see if there's any major problems before rolling it out to everyone. A lot of the improvements here are coming over directly from Proton Experimental, so all the advancements there will end up being the default version of Proton used for lots of games.

If you wish to try it out, here's what to do:

  • Search for "Proton 7.0" in your Steam Library.
  • Go into the Properties on it.
  • Select Betas from the left panel.
  • Find release-candidate in the drop-down and then let it update.

You can also see a previous video example guide I did for the Proton Experimental Beta on Steam Deck, it's the same method but for Proton 7.

While it may change before the final release, these are listed as newly playable:

  • Age of Chivalry
  • Beneath a Steel Sky
  • Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamer Edition
  • Cities XXL
  • Cladun X2
  • Cursed Armor
  • Disney•Pixar Cars Mater-National Championship
  • Gary Grigsby's War in the East
  • Gary Grigsby's War in the West
  • Iragon: Prologue
  • MechWarrior Online
  • Saviors of Sapphire Wings
  • Small Radios Big Televisions
  • Split/Second
  • Star Wars Episode I Racer
  • Stranger of Sword City Revisited
  • Succubus x Saint
  • V Rising
  • Warhammer: End Times - Vermintide
  • We Were Here Forever
  • Planetary Annihilation: TITANS

There's a lot of other improvements too including video playback fixed for:

  • Disintegration
  • Dread X Collection: The Hunt
  • EZ2ON REBOOT : R
  • El Hijo - A Wild West Tale
  • Ember Knights
  • Outward: Definitive Edition

  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid
  • Solasta: Crown of the Magister
  • Street Fighter V
  • The Room 4: Old Sins

I haven’t tried it at all yet because I’ve just assumed it won’t work but I’d be interesting to see if the “steering wheel detection” would assist with my Thrustmaster being a plug and play deal on Dirt Rally 2.0. Whenever I looked into it , it appeared the Logitech wheels have good Linux support but the Thrustmasters don’t
