Looking more promising than ever, the in-development free and open source RPG Veloren has a big new release out. A fully original open source game although it does take inspiration from Cube World, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Dwarf Fortress and Minecraft.

Some of what's new in this release includes:

  • Modular weapons
  • Real-time weather: rain, wind, thunder, lightning
  • Cliff towns
  • Interconnected cave networks with cave biomes
  • LoD trees (looks more visually interesting far-off)
  • More character customisation options
  • NPC personalities
  • Loot ownership for drops from mining
  • New ambience sounds
  • Slider for ambience volume
  • + Loads more

Good to see it continue to advance. It's properly playable, although a lot of the work currently is still going into the technical implementations of all the features so it's not quite a proper game yet, still somewhat fun to go exploring in though.

I’m following and sometimes testing Veloren since 2018 i think, and i believe it will be greatly fun !

Later ?

Currently, it’s a bit too clunky and empty : lots of nice places to explore, but nothing much to really "do".

Still, happy to jump in, from time to time.

Looks cool..

So will this play like Pirates?

Already have an open source version of civilisation, so I guess Pirates should be next.

I am not usually an MMO fan but I have enjoyed what I have played of Veloren. I really like that they use Vulkan this early so it doesn't have to be done later. I also like that they use Open Collective for donations.

looks like installing it is still entering a world of pain though. none of the 3 ways seem to work: https://reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/comments/w6s477/veloren_fresh_release_but_both_flatpak_and_snap/

i wish installing a simple game would not be, at least this confusing, to begin with

I think that is because commercial MMOs are especially bad with grinding and other player hostile stuff that is only good for the bottom line of the publisher and nothing else.

This one looks very promising, and it's cool to see a game built in Rust.
