Spider-Man Remastered is awesome on Steam Deck

By - | Views: 29,522

With Spider-Man Remastered now available on Steam after previously being PlayStation exclusive, I took it for a spin on Steam Deck and Linux desktop.

Just before release it was Steam Deck Verified and thankfully, the rating is absolutely correct here. With some really good defaults, Spider-Man Remastered is fantastic to play on the Steam Deck. I actually completed it years ago on the PS4, so I know the gameplay and story very well. Getting to play it wherever I want on the Steam Deck though — what absolute joy! This is easily going to be my favourite game of this year to play on Deck.

How about the Linux desktop though? How does it run?

Well, it's a little quirky. It will complain about GPU drivers every time without fail and if you have a controller plugged in, it will crash before the intro video every time. Unplug your controller, and it works 100% of the time. Plug the controller back in at the menu and at least on NVIDIA, it works fine then.

Performance seems reasonable during fights, on the High preset settings at 1080p with an NVIDIA 2080ti it was consistently well above 100FPS. When swinging around though, it drops down below 100FPS quite a lot.

Buy it on Humble Store to support us or Steam.

Quoting: mAdCraZyaJIt is such a good game. I’m going to be urging my buddies that didn’t play it on PlayStation to pick it up! Hopefully the Nvidia related bugs get patched up soon though.

I have got it going, Proton Experimental with NVIDIA 3060. Playing on medium to high settings.
Saves having to boot my PS4 up, which has been put away with all my other consoles. This game is absolutely stunning, a fantastic port to PC. Seeing the Steam Deck running it so well, is amazing. I'm in two minds to get a Steam Deck, as majority of games that can in Steam Deck, can run just fine on Desktop.

It was running fine for me yesterday but has crashed multiple times today. It's hard to tell if it's because of something in Proton or if it's just the game itself, especially when some Windows users are getting crashes too. Hopefully some patches will iron things out.

I couldn't get the game to launch initially until I switched to Proton Experimental and added the following to my launch options:

PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11 %command%

This is the most common recommendation at protondb.com, and it worked for me. I do get a couple of grey boxes with error messages that popup before the game actually starts (one is an error message which appears related to the launcher; the other says something about not having the correct GPU drivers), but I just click "OK" on them, and the game boots up without issue. Played for over two hours without a hitch.

Performance is not perfect as I do notice occasional framerate dips as Spider-Man swings through the city, but it doesn't affect gameplay. I'm playing on the medium graphics preset which look pretty good to me.

I noticed frame drops too, but once you unlock and buy some web swing skills, with XP points the game's frames go up and up, scarily like PS4. I have just completed it on easy mode, going to go through it on Normal, then Hard, then ultimate. Just cannot put this game down. Miles Morales should be out by the time I fully complete this game with all difficulty levels completed, side missions too. I'm just so happy to be away altogether from Windows. I cried when I first booted this game up, at the sheer beauty of this game running on my free and open source machine. I still keep pinching myself to make sure I'm not dreaming, that we all can play Windows games in Linux, with hardly any tinkering. When Valve announced about Proton back in 2018, did not think it was going to go anywhere and also thought it was not going to work, but now look where we are? Four years on and shocked at how we get first day releases working. The Steam Deck what a brilliant piece of tech. I use the Steam Deck as a tool, even though I don't own one, if it runs on Steam Deck, it'll run on Desktop.

Unfortunately AMD users do have games crash on them from time to time. No doubt you've brought the visual settings down too? Hopefully the update patch will sort it out for you?

I think I beat the game on Medium on the PS4, but never did finish the DLC stuff. I should play through it all on my Deck. I've started Miles Morales on the PS5, that game is a blast.

A properly done Spider-man game is a gem. Unlike this one;
