Vampire Survivors started a craze and the 1.0 release is out now

By - | Views: 26,993

Vampire Survivors is a time-survival horde game that started something of a craze, with many games copying their blueprint and now Vampire Survivors 1.0 is out.

With an Overwhelmingly Positive user review score from over 100,000 people, it's clearly hit the mark and it's easy to see why. With simple pick up and go gameplay, and the still low price at the 1.0 release — it's an ideal game to sink some time into regardless of it being on a coffee break or half your evening.

In the 1.0 release they've added quite a lot including a new event stage, new character art, a new weapon, a new B-side soundtrack, lots more translations, Twitch integration, an "Inverse Mode" that flips the maps, an Endless Mode that gets progressively more difficult forever and lots more.

Going by their previously announced roadmap, they're still working on a game engine port along with a supported Linux version once that's done.

For such a simple game, I've sunk a surprising amount of hours into it. With the 1.0 release, no doubt I will be playing plenty more of it, although it has to compete with Brotato for my time which is very similar and also great. I really do love just how insane these games get once you've put a few minutes into them, with the screen covered by enemies as all your abilities are flying around.

Vampire Survivors 1.0 - my first run today

There's just something about these simple games I can't get enough of. I can easily recommend you go and pick this one up, lots of replay value and plenty to unlock as you go through it.

You can buy it on Steam.

I put quite a lot of time into it at the beginning of the year, but Gunlocked captured my interest when it came out - marrying the horde mechanic to a vertical SHMUP works great for me. I should go back to Vampire Survivors, though, since I have no idea what a lot of the new mechanisms are.

VS is very good game, but it's not a new genre, how many claim.
Game called "Crimsonland" was probably first in the genre. I played it like a maniac in 2003 (it was re-released as a HD version on Steam in 2014).

PS
Okay, I see there was an article about this genre and Crimsonland is mentioned :) I thought, that people forgot about this game.

I don't think Crimsonland is really relevant. It's a twin-stick for a start. It's also over a tenner. It lacks synergy building. But most importantly, the original came out in 2004, and the remake was 2014, but barely anyone has heard of it. It wasn't new or influential in the way that VS obviously is, to have created a new genre, an entire industry of clones.

It's more Smash TV than Vampire Survivors. Robotron with weapon choice.

But who knows, maybe the devs did get their inspiration there.

I hope they get the native version sorted out soon. It runs much faster during the final few minutes (around 27:00 to 30:00) than the game normally does in proton.

And I've got my 100% back (for the third time, they kept adding achievements). First Steam game I've ever done that with. Anyone need pointers? I'd be glad to help (I'll try to avoid spoilers if you don't want them.)!
