System76 teasing new fully AMD powered Pangolin Linux laptop

By - | Views: 24,225

System76 saw your many comments and they're going to deliver. The Pangolin is making a return, powered by all AMD.

Every time they announce something, there's plenty of comments here and across the web asking them for more AMD units and so the Pangolin will deliver with an AMD Ryzen 7 6800U processor and AMD Radeon 680M graphics too. If that's not enough to make you drool it also has a 144Hz display, with compatibility for DDR5 RAM and PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. They also bumped up the battery to 70Wh with a claim of "up to" 10 hours battery life, but possibly longer.

All sounds pretty good!

Over email they also mentioned they heard your privacy calls, so it will also have a physical hardware privacy switch to fully disable both the webcam and microphone.

Tech specs:

  • Operating System: Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 6800U: 2.7 up to 4.7 GHz - 8 Cores - 16 Threads.
  • Display: 15.6′′ 1920×1080 FHD, Matte Finish, 144 Hz.
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon 680M.
  • Memory: 32 GB LPDDR5 @ 6400 MHz.
  • Storage: 2 x M.2 SSD(PCIe NVMe). Up to 4TB total.
  • Expansion: 3 × USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, 1 × USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, SD Card Reader.
  • Networking: Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2.
  • Video Ports: HDMI 2.0.
  • Camera: 1.0M 720p HD Webcam.
  • Battery: Li-Ion - 70 Wh.
  • Dimensions: 14.59′′ × 9.76′′ × 0.71′′ (37.06 × 24.79 × 1.80 cm).

Buyers receive "lifetime support" and it will start at $1,299. They've begun something of a teaser campaign for it, with no exact release date set just yet.

I'm... not exactly sure about how we should feel about this.

Glad to see this happening, though the StarLabs offering (StarFighter) is superior to this with more ram, better screen, better web cam, and larger battery.

True, but if you want to have a AMD processor in it, it starts at 2k dollars, so it is a different price category. I have to say though: between System76 and the others, the linux laptop space is improving rapidly and it seems that most vendors are starting to ship AMD laptops with very good-looking spec sheets.

Lost me at the 16:9 screen resolution. That really needs to become extinct on laptops. Even for watching movies, extra space is great for displaying controls so actions like pause do not interfere with content viewing.

Really nice spec. I would like to see more Rembrandt based laptops without dedicated GPUs even from "Windows only" friendly vendors, so it's really good that "Linux friendly" vendor provided that laptop. A lot of laptops have really stupid spec.

Hmh, 1300 isn't that much actually. I wonder if there will be ones with german keyboard layouts :D.

I'm a portables enthusiast, and though I won't be in need of any new hardware for a long time, it makes me happy every time I see how much better the Linux laptops and handhelds landscape is becoming so quickly, and how many options we now have. It's worlds away from even just a handful of years ago!

I just got my wife the Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Gen 4 AMD (13") Arctic Grey 21AS001AUS, which was on steep discount for Black Friday. It's another good Linux option, but of course you need to do the install yourself.

Pangolins are cute ambulatory pine cones. What's not to like?
