Just released out of Early Access is Backpack Hero, an intoxicating mixture of backpack sorting that feels like a Tetris shapes sorting-puzzle game with roguelike turn-based combat and exploration that's a thoroughly odd but terribly fun blend.

A game that became pretty popular thanks to the web-based demo on The full release is much expanded with a lot more content and features like the addition of rebuilding a town. Really clever idea too, although not the first to do it, but the setting and the way it handles the items and your growing backpack size is thoroughly charming.

It has Native Linux support and it's Steam Deck Verified. I've been playing it on the Steam Deck and it's an absolute joy. Needing to constantly swap around items with others, and re-position them to get the best placement to have all the items effects stack-up on other items in your backpack — it's a game that mixes puzzling and constant strategy. Really, really great stuff and a total joy to play.

This is an absolute gem of a game, and the extra context they added for this 1.0 is epic. Great job by the developers. If you enjoy deck-building, you'll probably find that this scratches the same itch - it's a lot of fun finding those game-breaking synergies that let you tear through the tougher enemies!.
Backpack Hero . . . So, this is a Dora the Explorer game?

I find the town addition a bit undercooked and not very engaging. There's various systems in place that were introduced just on release and had no proper public testing it seems and arguably it bloated the whole experience. Before that it was very close to the Slay the Spire formula - it was so lean. Now the main gameplay loop is almost the same, but there's this town and building and unlocking mechanic that gives player options, but introduces a bit of a headache with the cancerous mobile-web-idle-gaming resources collection. Technically it's okay, no screaming bugs or inconsistencies. It's still a good game, but I think they should have left it on the development stove for half a year or so.

Basically, just imagine playing Slay the Spire, but after each run you are forced to play some 10 year old knock-off gardening game from facebook where they are force-feeding you some dialogue about some chicken and a frog. It's still a good game, just because the main gameplay is great. Doesn't make the facebook gardening addition worth your time, though.
