Valve put up a brand new release of Proton Experimental for Steam Deck and Desktop Linux, which brings a sprinkle more HDR and some great bug fixes. This latest update was released on December 8th.

All the changes below:

More HDR support:

  • Made HDR options available in Mass Effect Legendary Edition and Injustice 2 on capable hardware including Steam Deck OLED.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed multiplayer in DiRT Rally.
  • Fixed experimental regression causing Melty Blood: Type Lumina multiplayer to crash.
  • Fixed VRAM reporting and outdated graphics driver message in The Last Of Us Part I.
  • Fixed VR compatibility with L.A. Noire: The VR Case Files and GTA V R.E.A.L. mod.
  • Fixed experimental regression causing Injustice 2 to render as incorrect size.
  • Fixed more memory leaks with Final Fantasy XIV launcher.
  • Fixed Proton 8 regression: The Binding of Isaac cursor no longer desyncs when toggling fullscreen and improved loading time for FINAL FANTASY XIII-2.

Changelog can be seen here.

It will just show up in your Steam Downloads as an update for Proton Experimental, as Proton updates just like games do, so keep an eye out for it. Want more info about Steam Play and Proton? Check out my beginner's guide.

How to change your Proton version:

Steam Deck:

  • Pick a game in your Library and head to the little cog icon on the right.
  • Click Properties, then Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

Desktop Linux:

  • Right click a game, go to Properties.
  • Compatibility on the left.
  • Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimental from the dropdown.

I'm sure it (HDR) requires using Game scope!?

Or a compatible wayland compositor, I think KWin (KDE) recently made sole progress on that front, at least for full screen games.

I believe KDE arre attempting that for their next major release (6.0), but it's currently not implemented

i would like KDE / Gnome to implement HDR & freesync toggle buttons in settings rather than having to add lines to kernal parameters or edit config files.

Now if we can get proper HDR support for Plasma Wayland then things will be looking up for the standard.

Then my next bucket list items needed is NVIDIA Reflex and FrameGen support.

Currently forced to use Win11 to play CP77 and Witcher-3 (assume I want RT and playable fps, )

Well, this has existed for a while for nVidia reflex, I think it even gives better results in some cases: https://github.com/ishitatsuyuki/LatencyFleX

Not upstreamed though.
