Valve release big stable Steam Client update for Steam / Steam Deck

By - | Views: 42,631

After a little while of many Beta releases, Valve has today launched the latest stable update to the Steam Client for Steam Deck and Desktop PCs.

Since this is a Steam Client update a lot of what's changed is shared between the Steam Deck version and the Desktop version (this is not a SteamOS update). To save you clicking around though you can find the full update notes below.

Haven't checked (and I might not for a while because my desktop GPU is now weaker than the Deck's APU) but the thing I'm most interested in is whether streaming to the Deck is still far too dark unless you disable hardware decoding. That came in with the last big Deck update. Don't know if it's a Steam client bug or a SteamOS bug, though.

Gonna hazard a guess that this means an 'upgrade' to gtk3. This dep already seems to have snuck in in the sniper runtime:

so it's likely the gtk2 dep (only really used for the systray menu) is getting dropped in the near future. At least the Gnome devs have stopped fucking about with gtk3 (in favour of fucking about with gtk4) and it's probably as stable as it'll ever get. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Still would prefer a move to Qt5/6. It'd be more inline with the Plasma desktop use for the Steam Deck. Hopefully they're not planning a move from Plasma to Gnome any time soon.

Valve recommend that other developers use Qt in the "bullshit launchers are bullshit" section of their Deck documentation.

QuoteOur recommendation is to use standalone technologies like Qt for launchers instead of OS-dependent frameworks like .NET / WPF. For best results, skip separate launchers altogether and integrate their functionality into the game client UI instead, where controller support is likely better.
Does anyone know what version of CEF they updated to?

And, just as I put bazzite on my steam deck (which is now working! )

I resolved my remote play problem: my deck display would freeze when streaming from my PC, but the display would unfreeze if I alt+tab on my PC and show the desktop. The solution was to disable "Use NVFBC on Nvidia GPU". I can know stream again reliably.

Uh, I had annoying issues with recent beta Big Picture + Remote Play. I am hesitant about this update but gotta try it out first.
