The free and open source PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 is getting easier to use with Steam, with the devs announcing a useful new feature.

In an update posted on X/Twitter, they announced "You can now add games to Steam directly from RPCS3! Games can be launched directly from Steam, without going through the main RPCS3 UI." and provided a couple screenshots to show it off:

Seems like a nice idea. That way you can just dive right into your favourite classics from the PS3, while also taking advantage of the various extra features that Steam offers. Especially nice for those of you (like me), who like to keep everything under one roof. It's nice that Steam can just act like a launcher for emulation, and even for other stores if you install them via Proton.

They also recently announced some improvements for people playing on handheld PCs like the Steam Deck.

Good emulator if you want to play a game which isn't on PC (anymore).

Nice feature to have and this is what Lutris does as well when you add a game on the program that you can link up to Steam. The last time I fiddled with RPCS3, I had to use some additional commands on the Launch Options after adding the emulator to Steam in order to get the games to run.

Remember fellow pirat er, gamers, tools like this hold increasing value in an age of games being selectively withdrawn from PC.

They've also added artwork automatically being added to the Steam entry of the game.

I was gonna simply report it with a thoughtful comment, but then decided that it might do more good to share my personal opinion publicly (and potentially receive other opinions of what we are or want to be):

I get it that piracy is normal or even necessary for certain demographics (inequality is quite bad even inside countries or districts 😔!). But I don't think we should risk skirting quite that far this line of permitted speech about content punishable by those who hold power in our globalized society. I don't believe these power structures or their very selective enforcement are fair. (Corporations scraping for AI training data being another egregious example of this, also undermining even more semblance of a rules-based society; On the other hand, I'm glad copyrights are far less strictly enforced in poorer countries (in my experience)).

I wouldn't mind the comment quite as much if the commenter were risking mentioning punishable activities in order to provide more substantive value to the community AND they were subtle about it. There is a time and place to fight the power, but I feel this comment would be as valuable without allusions to piracy.

Any thoughts?
