Sony to no longer bring PlayStation narrative single-player games to PC

It is now reportedly confirmed that Sony will no longer bring their PlayStation narrative single-player games to PC. Return of the console wars?

Back in March there was the report that Sony would be moving away from PC ports, and now it seems we have some further confirmation of this. Coming from Jason Schreier of Bloomberg posting on Bluesky to note: "SCOOP: PlayStation studio business CEO Hermen Hulst told staff in a town hall Monday morning that the company's narrative single-player games will now be PlayStation exclusive, confirming Bloomberg's reporting from earlier this year."

They've put quite a few games on PC including The Last of Us, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero Dawn, Helldivers 2, Spider Man, God of War and plenty more. But, they faced a fair amount of backlash when trying to force the PlayStation Network - and even restricted a bunch of games from purchases in many regions on Steam. So they did make a quite a few missteps there.

With Xbox (or is it XBOX now?), Microsoft are refocusing as well with their new gaming CEO. They've moved away from the everything is an XBOX branding, and will quite likely push some exclusives as well.

And so, with that, I'm making a firm claim that the console wars have returned. What a shame, we had a good run of it on PC for a while, and thanks to Valve's Proton we've been able to play tons of these AAA games on Linux but all good things come to an end as they say.

Now we just need the Linux powered Steam Machine to actually release.

Well ... historically consoles degenerated over the years. Not a surprise they try to apply life support to their dying platforms in the form of exclusives. It's how Nintendon't (despite suing people) survived the last two decades and yet don't know they are on a dying platform as well.

I mean not even Microsoft realised Windows is a dead platform as well and still clinging to it and just making the live of every Windows users even more miserable every day just because they can not let go and accept the future is cross platform (not web based cross platform)

Vegeta, what does the scouter say about the price of the PS6?

So: In the mind of Sony CEOs we are going to buy another PC with limited functionality for the same price as a normal PC only to play some games they artificially gated to only run on that limited PC?

Hahahahahahahaha!

Oh wait. They are serious? Let me laugh even louder!

just wait until they crawl back to Steam because the revenue declined and noone can afford the PS6 🥰

I don't see this happening at all, the worst thing that could conceivably happen is that they could stop selling the already released PS games.

Another cycle in history of the endless loop between console companies coming to PC and leaving it. Personally I am indifferent to console exclusive games.
Out of all PlayStation 3 games I liked only Demon's Souls, and I still I wouldn't miss much if I looked over it. Tried few other PS3 exclusives, they were pretty bad, after it I decided I don't care anymore. I really start to believe that exclusivity is a gas lighting strategy to convince consumers that exclusive games have more value than they actually do. And my hypothesis is supported by cultural environment that surrounds it. Just check the bizarre emotionally negative posts in social media that some people make when another game stops being a console exclusive and gets released on PC.

Regarding the topic: don't worry. These news are not about all games that are released on consoles. Only games developed by internal Sony studios will be exclusives, other won't.

Correct me if I am wrong, but games, like Stellar Blade, were not developed by an internal Sony studio, and had only time limited exclusive deal with Sony. After that, they got published on PC, yes, by PlayStation publishing, but anyways. Games like this will seek multi platform publishing, unless they estimate sales on PC will bring them less money, than exclusive deals with Sony. Sony can buy few games for this purpose, but they won't be financially able to buy most of them. Especially after everyone have seen how much profit can be made on PC.

Example 1:
Stellar Blade sold a million units in 3 days on PC.

Example 2:
Stellar Blade 2 to be self-published, may go multi-platform.
Shift Up says Stellar Blade 2 news is on the way this year, and it could be a day-one PC launch.

I've been a Playstation guy for a long while and I'm a fan of games like God Of War, Uncharted, etc. But I wanted to have those games on PC. It's just convenient that you can play your catalogue year after year even if you upgrade your PC. With consoles you start your catalogue over and over again with a new console release. Also, PS5's catalogue has been pretty weak, so...I wouldn't recommend anybody buying a PS5. Will it be so weak for the PS6 too? Not willing to buy an expensive console just for 2 games...guess I'll have to wait for PC emulation now.

I don't know how this works for other people, but games that aren't running on my system do not exist for me. And I cannot buy what doesn't exist. Games that do not exist also cannot compel me to buy a device called a "console".

Imagine having to pay upwards of $700 just to register an Epic Games Store account. That's what consoles are to me - gatekeeping games behind a hardware purchase and taking games away from PC.

I can only pray and hope that PC will still get great AAA games, and that PC game developers start listening to their actual customers, AKA gamers or "chuds", again.

Consoles are tightly locked-down computers, so IMHO, consoles are better for online competitive multiplayer titles, where anti-cheat is absolutely essential.

Stupid move from Sony, but no loss whatsoever for me. Fine, I just won't give you whatever the stupidly high cost will be for Horizon 3 and I just won't play it. So .... they just completely lost that money. I'm never going to buy a playstation console itself. There are so many others like me as well. It's monumentally stupid, but oh well, that's kinda par for the course for brain rotted suits in the c suite.

Quoting: pbWhat if the declining console sales are not a result of the lack of exclusives but of shrinking living spaces of young adults? What will they do next if the numbers still don't go up?
I feel like that would be an argument for consoles rather than against them. A lot of people don’t need desktop computers anymore since they have an OS in their pocket. Adding one device next to your TV isn’t as space-consuming as putting a computer and its peripherals on a desk with an additional screen — not to mention handhelds.

I did not buy Horizon Forbidden West, because they did not release it on GOG like the first part. All I was waiting for was a Steam free version, because I believed Sony just became cool. Seems it was a one-hit-wonder. Anyway, PC has enough cool games for my entire lifespan.
