Even Xbox Game Studios are talking about Steam Deck compatibility

By - | Views: 14,436

Yes, even a fair few games that Microsoft / Xbox publish will work out of the box on the Steam Deck. As Xbox Game Studios announced in a post on Steam, it shows just how much of a shift the Steam Deck is causing for Linux gaming as a whole to have them talk about it.

Contrary to what some other sites will tell you though, Microsoft didn't mark them as Verified, Valve did. As another point, I've seen a few other journalist say some games "won't work", but even the official post says:

It's up to our studios how they fit Steam Deck integration for their games into their busy schedules, and with a lot of great stuff already in the works some titles may take longer.

Microsoft aren't telling studios not to, or that they won't: just that some will take time.

Here's what's Verified:

  • DEATHLOOP
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
  • The Evil Within
  • Fallout Shelter
  • Prey
  • Battletoads
  • Max: The Curse of Brotherhood

Playable:

  • Sea of Thieves
  • Fallout 4
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Quantum Break
  • State of Decay: YOSE

Curiously, Microsoft has listed these titles as currently unsupported due to anti-cheat:

  • Gears 5
  • Halo MCC
  • Halo Infinite
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Last we checked, Halo Infinite was not due to anti-cheat but just issues with VKD3D-Proton. It should hopefully eventually get working properly. As for the Halo Masterchief Collection, that works in single-player but not the main online multiplayer and I even showed Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 2 plus Halo 3 and Halo Reach working on a normal Linux desktop some time ago.

As far as I know, none of the Verified or Playable games here have had any work done by the developers to make them work. I have only looked at the Steam update data for 2 of them though, so don't take my word for it.

GoL reported quite a few games that were actively updated to meet requirements...
It felt like the reason for most articles just one or two weeks ago. :)

Needs to add Psychonauts (native) and always confuse me Prey if its the first or second.
The first pray it's native, the second not (all are good games but unrelated).
And Halo MCC it works (apart of online).

Man, I'd love to play Deathloop. I wish they'd hurry up and ditch Denuvo from that title. Weird that so many Arkane Studio games end up with that shit on them. Bethesda (/Microsoft) at least know quality when they see it. Just a shame they're also bought into the whole "but but but PIRACY!!" fallacy.

Imagine they brought Xbox Game Pass to steam, that would be huge.

The problem is the Xbox app...
To make that app running on Linux will be the maximum compatibility achievement.

It used to. I played through the entire Halo Reach campaign with a Windows buddy. We played into Halo 1 for a while and planned to play them all in chronological order. But we stopped being able to join each other's game! SUCKS

The Xbox App is an electron app.. not hard to port that but thing is your comment makes little to no sense.. they would NOT require to use the xbox app if they had gamepass on steam as none of their games on steam require the app for one. so even if they required the app to access gamepass.. which if EA play is any indication they don't but if they did wouldn't be anything for them to port a xbox app to linux since its an electron app

HOW is forza 4 considered playable??
It lags every few seconds and crashes every 30 (on average) minutes on my PC with superior specs, am I missing something?
