There seems to be no stopping Steam right now, Valve are on a roll with repeatedly breaking their own user records.

Sound familiar? Yeah, at this point it's not even a surprise. With masses more people staying home, it's going to happen and likely again a few more times still. Yesterday, for the first time, Steam hit over 24 million concurrent users online at the same time with just over 7 million of those actually in a game.

We missed something else too, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has repeatedly smashed through milestones too since last writing about it only a week or so ago. At each peak time of around 6-7PM UTC, CS:GO regularly smashed records over the last week to a new high of 1,226,724 set on April 1st.

Here's a new timeline of events for you:

  • February 3 - Steam hits new record of users online at 18,801,944
  • February 8/9 - Steam hits new record of users online at 19,107,803. Additionally, CS:GO hit 876,575 and then again the next day 901,681.
  • March 14/15 - CS:GO breaks a million people online for the first time ever at around 1,007,062 players and then again the next day with around 1,024,845. Meanwhile during this time, Steam broke a record again for users online at 19,728,027 and again the following day broke 20 million (about 20,313,451) for the first time ever!
  • March 22/23 - Steam hits 22,678,529 online and CS:GO reaches a new peak of 1,102,067.
  • March 29 - Steam hits 23,434,674 users online, plus CS:GO hits 1,123,002
  • April 1 - CS:GO hits another record high of 1,226,724 players online
  • April 3 - Steam hits 24,157,126 concurrent users online.

You know what's also slightly interesting? Valve's monthly Hardware Survey went out as usual, and it appears to show a small uptick in the Linux percentage. For March, it showed Linux at 0.87%. See the history of it on our Steam Tracker.

That means there are approximately 210 167 Linux users out of those 24 157 126 concurrent users. Absolutely wonderful!

And the CS: GO linux bugs are still there, on the new Chlorine map, I have exactly 10 fps at spawn while in the rest of the map I have 140 fps. I think there are textures that make me lag but I don't know how to fix it, it's the same on some maps in Community servers. Always slowdowns with panorama_ui even if it works better than before.

Hope to see an update with Vulkan and source 2 in the future, that's the only thing I want. Even with proton, my game is more beautiful and suffers less, I just have a few freezes at times, but unfortunately I cannot play with it because online doesn't work with VAC.

PS: I know that Faceit isn't connected to Steam, but if a real competitive mode without Russian and without cheater would be present in CS:GO native, it would only make the game better.

Yeah. It's 1%, but that's still a fairly decent chunk of market if even 5% of Linux users buy your game. If you base your development model right so that support is low-effort, I'm sure most devs would welcome another ten thousand sales. Of course that 5% might be optimistic...

And that's only daily users, of course. Steam accounts are over 100 million, I think?

You know, I'd love to know how many Linux users there are. But every time a distro talks about putting a phone home in, even a largely anonymous one, we get in a big uproar about privacy. <sigh>

Meanwhile Windows 10 is sending daily telemetry on everything you search for on your PC, how it performs, what hardware you're running, what software you have installed. It's an infuriating imbalance.

Steam hit over 1 billion accounts last year, with ~95 million monthly active.

I remember back in my Amiga-diehard days (the late '90s), someone estimated that there were probably around 100,000 regular Amiga users in total. And development still happened, hardware was still released, we even had the occasional commercial (indie) game. It was small-scale, but we muddled along.

Over 200,000 users online at once on Steam is the major leagues compared to that. I think Linux is doing okay. It could always be better, but I don't get the sense of battling against the odds that I did back then.

My CS:GO on Ubuntu 19.10 instantly crashes everytime I try to play on the new Anubis map.
On Chlorine it's fine. The devs have answered me that my bug report is low-priority...

It's not the joystick/gamepad thing is it? Where you have a gamepad plugged in and CS:GO just silently fails to start? If so, adding "-nojoy" as a launch parameter can help. I just can't believe that this is still a bug - was reported two years ago! The comments are funny on that thread too as folk get pissy-er and pissy-er as time goes by.
